What is a cash account in trading?

In one line: A cash account is a brokerage account where you can only buy with money you've already deposited. There's no borrowing, so no margin.

Trading glossary · Updated 2026-10-21

A simple example

You deposit $2,000 into a cash account. You can buy up to $2,000 of stock. Not $4,000, because nothing is borrowed.

If the stock drops 25%, your $2,000 becomes $1,500. You can't lose more than you put in, and you'll never get a Margin call.

How settlement works

When you sell, the cash isn't "settled" right away. US stock trades settle one business day later, called T+1.

Sell $2,000 of stock on Monday. The cash is usable for new buys right away at most brokers, but it's only fully settled on Tuesday. That timing matters for the rules below. More in Settlement.

The main rules

Options buying is often allowed, but rules differ. Check your broker.

Why it matters

A cash account is a calm place to start. Losses are limited to what you deposited. You learn sizing and patience without borrowed money making every move bigger.

The trade-off: less flexibility, and you may wait for cash to settle between trades. See cash vs margin account for the full comparison.

A common mistake

Thinking "no margin" means "no risk". You can still lose most of a position if you size it too big. One stock falling 40% hurts in any account.

Size each trade from your stop, not your balance. The position size calculator does it for you.

Questions

Can you day trade in a cash account?

Yes, as long as you use settled money for each buy. The old $25,000 pattern day trader minimum applied to margin accounts and was eliminated in 2026.

Can you lose more than you invest in a cash account?

Not when you're buying stocks or buying options. Without borrowing, the most you can lose is what you paid.

How long does it take for cash to settle?

For US stocks, one business day after the trade (T+1), since May 2024.
