What is cold storage in crypto?
In one line: Cold storage means keeping the private keys to your crypto on a device or medium that isn't connected to the internet, such as a hardware wallet.
Hot vs cold
A hot wallet keeps keys on an internet-connected device, like a phone app. It's handy for spending.
A cold wallet keeps keys offline. To send coins, you sign the transaction on the offline device. The key itself never touches the internet.
| Hot wallet | Cold storage | |
|---|---|---|
| Online? | Yes | No |
| Best for | Small, everyday amounts | Larger amounts held long term |
| Main risk | Hacks, malware | Losing the device and the backup |
The main types
- Hardware wallet: a small device made for this. The most common choice.
- Paper or metal backup: your recovery phrase written down and stored safely.
- Air-gapped computer: a computer that never goes online. Rare for beginners.
A simple example
Say you hold 0.2 BTC long term and keep $100 worth in a phone wallet for small sends.
The 0.2 BTC sits on a hardware wallet. Its 24-word recovery phrase is written on paper, kept in two separate safe places. Even if your phone is hacked, the hacker can only reach the $100.
Why it matters
Most crypto theft happens online: hacked exchanges, phishing sites, malware. Keys kept offline are out of reach of all of that.
Big exchanges keep most customer funds in cold storage for the same reason. More on choosing where to hold coins in crypto trading for beginners.
Common mistakes and safety tips
- Buying a used hardware wallet. It could be tampered with. Buy new, directly from the maker.
- Photographing the recovery phrase. That puts it back online. Paper or metal only.
- Only one backup. A fire or flood can take it. Keep a second copy somewhere else.
- Never testing recovery. Practise restoring with a small amount first, so you know the backup works.
Cold storage protects keys, not prices. Coins in cold storage can still fall in value.
Questions
Is cold storage 100% safe?
Nothing is. It removes online risks, but the backup can be lost, stolen or destroyed. Careful storage matters.
What happens if my hardware wallet breaks?
Your coins aren't on the device. Restore the recovery phrase onto a new wallet and they're back.
Do I need cold storage for small amounts?
Many people only bother for amounts they'd hate to lose. For small sums, a well-secured hot wallet is common.
