What is DTE in options?
In one line: Days to expiration (DTE) is the number of calendar days left until an option expires; it sets how much time value the option has and how fast that value melts.
How it works
DTE means days to expiration. It's how many calendar days are left before an option expires. An option expiring in four weeks has about 28 DTE. One expiring Friday, seen on Monday, has 4 DTE.
DTE matters because of Time value. More days left means more time value, so a bigger premium. Fewer days means less.
Time value doesn't melt evenly. It melts slowly at 60 DTE, faster at 30, and fastest in the last week. That speed is called Theta. On a chain, DTE is usually shown next to each Expiration date.
An example (hypothetical)
XYZ trades at $50 (an illustration, not a trade idea). You want to sell a $45 put. Here are three expiries. The premiums are made up. The last column shows what happens if XYZ is at $42 on expiry day.
| DTE | Premium | Days for XYZ to move against you | If XYZ is $42 at expiry |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | $0.35 | 7 | −$300 + $35 = −$265 |
| 30 | $1.00 | 30 | −$300 + $100 = −$200 |
| 45 | $1.30 | 45 | −$300 + $130 = −$170 |
The longer trade pays more, and gives a bit more cushion if things go wrong. But it also gives the stock more days to fall. The short trade melts fastest but leaves you almost no room.
Why it matters for sellers
DTE is the dial you turn on every trade. It sets three things at once:
- How much you're paid. More days, more premium.
- How long your cash is tied up. A 45-day put holds your collateral for 45 days.
- How fast things change near the end. In the last week, small stock moves swing the option's price hard.
Many sellers in the wheel strategy pick a middle range and stick to it, so each trade is easy to compare with the last. Our DTE explained guide compares the ranges, and theta decay shows the melting curve.
Watch DTE against the calendar too. An earnings date or Ex-dividend date inside your DTE changes the trade.
Questions
Does DTE count weekends?
Yes. DTE is calendar days, so weekends and holidays count, even though the market is closed.
What does 0 DTE mean?
The option expires today. Its time value is almost gone, and small moves can swing it from worthless to in the money within hours.
Is a higher DTE better for sellers?
Not better, just different. You collect more and decide less often, but your cash is tied up longer and the stock has more time to move.
