What is DeFi (decentralized finance)?

In one line: DeFi, short for decentralized finance, means financial apps such as trading, lending and borrowing that run on a blockchain through code instead of a bank or broker.

How it works

DeFi apps run on "smart contracts": programs stored on a Blockchain, usually Ethereum or a similar network. You connect your own Crypto wallet, and the code does the rest. No account sign-up, no bank.

Common uses:

A simple example

You swap $1,000 of ETH for a Stablecoin on a DEX.

Total cost: about $9, or 0.9%. Example numbers only. Your wallet shows the real ones before you confirm.

Why it matters

DeFi shows what blockchains can do beyond sending coins. It's open to anyone with a wallet, around the clock.

But the safety nets of normal finance aren't there. No FDIC insurance, no SIPC protection, and often no one to call. If code has a bug or a project is a scam, money can be gone in minutes.

Common risks and safety tips

Very high advertised yields are a warning sign, not a feature. Ask where the yield really comes from.

Questions

Is DeFi legal in the US?

Using DeFi apps isn't illegal in itself, but rules are still being worked out and some projects have faced enforcement. Taxes still apply.

Is DeFi safe?

It carries real risks: bugs, hacks, scams and price swings. Many people only use small amounts they can afford to lose.

What's the difference between DeFi and a crypto exchange?

A regular exchange is a company that holds your coins. DeFi apps are code you use from your own wallet.
