What does "delta neutral" mean?

In one line: Delta neutral means a position's total delta is about zero, so small moves in the stock neither help nor hurt it; the wheel is not delta neutral, it is long the stock.

How it works

Delta measures how much a position moves when the stock moves $1. One hundred shares have a delta of 100. A sold 0.30-delta put adds about +30. A sold call takes delta away.

Add up every leg and you get the position's net delta. Delta neutral means that total is near zero. The stock ticks up or down a little and the position's value barely changes. Market makers aim for this because they get paid on spreads and volatility, not direction.

A seller in the wheel strategy is not delta neutral and shouldn't pretend to be. A cash-secured put is positive delta: you want the stock up or flat. Shares with a covered call are still mostly positive delta. The wheel is a long-the-stock strategy with premium on top.

An example (hypothetical)

XYZ trades at $50 (an illustration, not a trade idea). You own 100 shares (delta +100) and sell a $55 call with a delta of 0.30 for $1.00 ($100). Net delta: +100 − 30 = +70. The call cut your direction by about a third. It didn't remove it.

XYZ moves toSharesSold call (roughly)Position, next day
$51 (+$1)+$100−$30about +$70
$50 (flat)$0small theta gainabout +$3
$49 (−$1)−$100+$30about −$70
$44 (−$6)−$600+$90, then the call is nearly worthlessabout −$510

At −$6 the call's delta shrinks toward zero, so it stops helping. You're back to nearly full share exposure, down about $510, with the premium already counted.

Why it matters for sellers

Knowing you're not neutral stops a common mistake: selling a call and feeling hedged. A 0.30-delta call offsets about $30 of the first $100 move. In a real drop, it offsets less and less. The stock is the position.

It also explains what "neutral" strategies trade away. An iron condor or a strangle can sit near zero delta, but they carry risk on both sides and need adjusting. The wheel takes a direction on purpose, on a stock you'd own, because that's simpler to size and to hold through a bad month.

If you want to know your real exposure, add up the deltas on your broker's position screen. The number is usually bigger than it feels. Our delta guide for sellers shows how to read it.

Questions

Is the wheel strategy delta neutral?

No. A cash-secured put and a covered call both have positive delta. The wheel wants the stock flat or up and loses when it falls; it's a long-stock strategy with premium added.

Does selling a covered call hedge my shares?

Only a little. A 0.30-delta call offsets about 30% of a small move, and less as the stock falls further. It's a cushion, not a hedge.

Who uses delta-neutral positions?

Market makers and volatility traders who want to be paid on spreads, time decay or volatility changes without taking a view on direction. It takes constant adjusting.
