What are physically settled options?

In one line: Physically settled options are contracts where exercise means real shares change hands, 100 shares bought or sold at the strike price, instead of a cash payment.

How it works

With a physically settled option, exercise moves the actual stock. If a call is exercised, the seller delivers 100 shares and gets the strike price in cash. If a put is exercised, the seller buys 100 shares at the strike.

Standard US stock options and ETF options, like those on SPY, are physically settled. Most broad index options, like SPX, are not. Those are Cash-settled options: only the cash difference changes hands.

Each contract normally covers 100 shares. That can change after a split or a merger, so check the contract details if anything looks odd.

An example (hypothetical)

You sell a $45 Put option on XYZ for $1.00 and collect $100 (an illustration, not a trade idea). XYZ closes at $40 on expiry day.

The put is exercised. This is Assignment. Because the option is physically settled, $4,500 leaves your cash and 100 shares of XYZ arrive, usually by the next morning. Here's how that compares with a cash-settled option on the same numbers:

What you seePhysically settled (stock option)Cash-settled (index option)
Cash−$4,500 for the shares−$500 paid out ($5 × 100)
Shares+100 XYZ, worth $4,000None
Premium kept+$100+$100
Result today−$400 on paper, and you hold the stock−$400, and the trade is over

The loss is the same on the day. The difference is what comes next. With physical settlement, you own the shares, and their price keeps moving. If XYZ drops to $35, your loss grows to −$900 unless you sell.

Why it matters for sellers

Physical settlement is what makes the wheel strategy a wheel. A put assignment hands you shares. Those shares let you sell a Covered call. A call assignment takes them away, and you're back to cash. Cash-settled options can't do this. There are no shares to pass along.

It also means the cash, or the shares, must be ready. A $45 put can pull $4,500 out of your account overnight. If the money isn't there, your broker may sell things for you, at prices you didn't pick. Our options assignment guide shows what that looks like.

So before you sell any stock option, ask one question: am I ready for 100 shares to move?

Questions

Are SPY options physically settled?

Yes. SPY is an ETF, and its options deliver shares of SPY. SPX options, on the index itself, settle in cash.

Can I avoid getting the shares?

Close the option before expiry by buying it back. Once it's exercised, the shares move.

When do the shares or cash actually land?

Usually by the next business morning. The stock trade settles one business day after the exercise.
