What does "sell to close" mean?
In one line: Sell to close is the order that ends a long option position: you sell the contract you bought, and collect whatever it's worth now.
How it works
If you bought an option with Buy to open, sell to close is how you end it. You sell the same contract back into the market. You collect its current price, often near the bid.
Your result is the gap between what you paid and what you sold it for:
- Bought for $2.00, sold for $3.10: you make $110.
- Bought for $2.00, sold for $0.60: you lose $140.
Sell to close is not the same as Sell to open. Sell to open starts a short position. Sell to close ends a long one. The words look alike. The positions are opposites.
An example (hypothetical)
XYZ trades at $50 (an illustration, not a trade idea). You buy to open a 45-day $50 call for $2.00 ($200). Here's what selling it back brings at different points.
| When you sell to close | Call price | Your result |
|---|---|---|
| XYZ at $54, 30 days left | $5.10 | +$310 |
| XYZ at $51, 20 days left | $2.10 | +$10 |
| XYZ at $50, 10 days left | $0.90 | −$110 |
| XYZ at $47, 5 days left | $0.15 | −$185 |
Look at the third row. XYZ didn't move, but the call lost $110. Time value melted, which is the buyer's cost and the seller's pay.
Why it matters for sellers
As a seller, you'll use sell to close when you own an option as part of a bigger trade:
- A protective put under your shares, in a Collar.
- The long leg of a spread.
- The long call in a Poor man's covered call.
It also explains why so many in-the-money options are sold rather than used. If a holder exercises early, they throw away whatever time value is left. Selling to close collects it instead. That's one reason early Assignment is less common than many new sellers fear, until time value runs thin.
In the wheel strategy, you're on the selling side, so the matching close for you is Buy to close. Our options trading basics guide lays out all four order types side by side.
Questions
What's the difference between sell to close and sell to open?
Sell to close ends an option you bought. Sell to open starts a new short option you didn't own. Picking the wrong one can open a position you didn't want.
Do I have to sell to close before expiry?
No. If the option is in the money at expiry, it's usually exercised automatically. If it's out of the money, it expires worthless. Selling before then lets you keep any time value left.
Why did my option sell for less than the price I saw?
You usually sell near the bid, which is below the mid and the last trade. Use a limit order to set the lowest price you'll take.
