What is a short call?
In one line: A short call is the position you hold after selling a call option: you keep the premium and must sell 100 shares at the strike if the buyer exercises.
How it works
A Call option gives its buyer the right to buy 100 shares at the strike. The seller takes the premium and the duty to deliver those shares. "Short call" means you're the seller and the position is open.
There are two versions, and the difference is everything:
- Covered: you already own the 100 shares. If assigned, they're sold at the strike. Your loss on a rise is capped, because you hand over shares you have. This is the Covered call, the second half of the wheel strategy.
- Naked: you own no shares. If assigned, you must buy them at market and sell at the strike. No ceiling on the loss. See Naked call.
You open either with a Sell to open order and close with Buy to close.
An example (hypothetical)
XYZ trades at $50. You sell one 30-day $55 call for $1.00 and collect $100 (an illustration, not a trade idea). Here's the covered version, with 100 shares bought at $50, next to the naked one.
| XYZ at expiry | Covered: shares + premium | Naked: premium only |
|---|---|---|
| $35 | −$1,500 + $100 = −$1,400 | +$100 |
| $50 | $0 + $100 = +$100 | +$100 |
| $55 | +$500 + $100 = +$600 | +$100 |
| $70 | Called away at $55: +$600 (capped) | −$1,500 + $100 = −$1,400 |
| $90 | +$600 (capped) | −$3,500 + $100 = −$3,400 |
Notice the two columns lose on opposite sides. The covered seller loses when the stock falls, because the shares fall. The naked seller loses when it rises, without limit. A math example, not a promise.
Why it matters for sellers
In the wheel, a short call is only ever covered. You're selling the right to buy shares you'd be fine letting go at the strike. The premium is a fee for capping your own upside.
That cap is the thing to respect. If XYZ runs to $70, a plain shareholder is up $2,000; you're up $600. Return if called is the name for that ceiling. It's the most the trade can make, not what it usually makes.
Watch the Ex-dividend date too. A short call deep in the money the day before a dividend is often exercised early, and the shares leave before the dividend is paid.
Questions
Is a short call the same as a covered call?
A covered call is a short call plus 100 shares. "Short call" on its own just means you sold a call. Whether it's covered depends on owning the stock.
What's the max loss on a short call?
Covered: the cost of the shares minus the premium, if the stock went to zero. Naked: no maximum, because the stock can rise without limit.
When would a short call be assigned?
Usually at expiry if the stock is above the strike. It can also happen early, most often the day before an ex-dividend date when the call is deep in the money.
