Can you trade options in a TFSA?
In one line: TFSA options are listed options traded inside a Canadian Tax-Free Savings Account, usually limited to covered calls, bought options and, at some brokers, cash-secured puts.
How it works
Yes, you can trade some options in a TFSA, Canada's Tax-Free Savings Account. Listed options are allowed investments there. But a TFSA can't borrow, so anything that needs margin is out.
In general:
- Covered calls on shares you hold in the TFSA: widely allowed.
- Buying calls and puts: widely allowed.
- Cash-secured puts: allowed at some brokers, not at others. The full cash must sit in the account.
- Naked calls, puts on margin, and spreads that need margin: not allowed.
Brokers such as Questrade, Interactive Brokers and Wealthsimple each set their own options permissions for registered accounts. Check your broker's current help pages before you plan a trade.

An example (hypothetical)
You hold 100 shares of a Canadian stock, XYZ, in your TFSA, bought at $50 (an illustration, not a trade idea). You sell a $55 covered call for $1.00.
| XYZ at expiry | What happens | Result in the TFSA |
|---|---|---|
| $58 | Called away at $55 | +$600, not taxed inside the account |
| $50 | Call expires | +$100 |
| $40 | Call expires; you keep the shares | −$900 |
The gains aren't taxed. But the loss row has a catch. A loss in a TFSA can't be used against gains elsewhere. And since withdrawals, not losses, add back contribution room, that $900 of tax-free space is simply gone. A math example, not a promise.
Why it matters for sellers
A TFSA can hold the covered-call half of the wheel strategy at most brokers. The put half depends on your broker. Our guide on the wheel in a TFSA goes further.
Three things to know:
- Lots of trading can be taxed. If the CRA decides you're running a trading business inside a TFSA, the gains can be taxed as business income. Many quick trades raise that risk.
- US dividends lose some to tax. US stocks in a TFSA usually have tax withheld on dividends, and you can't get it back.
- Assignment needs the cash. A put assigned in a TFSA needs the full amount already in the account, and you can't add more than your room allows.
Questions
Can I sell cash-secured puts in a TFSA?
At some brokers, yes, with the full cash in the account. Others don't allow it. Check your broker's help pages.
Can I lose money trading options in a TFSA?
Yes. The account shields gains from tax, not from losses. And a loss doesn't come back as contribution room.
Are options gains in a TFSA tax-free?
Usually, yes. The exception is if the CRA sees your trading as a business. General information, not tax advice.
