6B futures explained: British pound futures vs GBP/USD
6B is the British pound against the dollar, traded on a US exchange. If you know GBP/USD, you already know the story. What changes is the contract, the costs and the clock.
At a glance
| Item | 6B (British Pound futures) |
|---|---|
| What it is | A futures contract for 62,500 British pounds, priced in US dollars per pound |
| Tick size | 0.0001 (one pip) |
| One tick is worth | $6.25 |
| Busiest hours (ET) | About 3 am – noon, London's day into the New York morning |
| What moves it most | The Bank of England, UK inflation and jobs data, the Fed |
| Trading hours | Sunday to Friday, 6 pm – 5 pm ET, with a daily one-hour break |
Specs checked Oct 2026. Check cmegroup.com for current specs before you trade. A micro contract (6,250 pounds) also trades.
6B vs spot GBP/USD
Both follow the same exchange rate, quoted the same way: dollars per pound.
| 6B futures | Spot GBP/USD | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | CME exchange | Forex broker |
| Size | Fixed: 62,500 pounds | Flexible lots |
| Costs | Commission + exchange fees | Mostly the spread |
| Holding cost | Built into the price until expiry | Daily swap |
| Expiry | Quarterly (Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec) | None |
One 6B tick ($6.25) is a bit more than half a standard forex lot's pip ($10 per 100,000 pounds), because the contract is smaller.
What moves it
The Bank of England (BoE). Its Monetary Policy Committee meets 8 times a year. The decision usually comes out at noon UK time, which is usually 7 am ET.
UK data. UK inflation (CPI), jobs and wage data, and GDP come out at 7 am UK time, usually 2 am ET. Those early releases can set the day's tone before New York wakes up.
The Fed. US CPI and jobs data at 8:30 am ET, and the FOMC at 2:00 pm ET.
UK budgets and politics. Big fiscal news can hit the pound and UK bond markets together. The September 2022 "mini-budget" sent the pound to a record low against the dollar within days.
Risk mood. The pound tends to soften when global markets get nervous.
When it's busiest
London is usually 5 hours ahead of New York. For a few weeks in March and late October / early November, when clocks change on different dates, it's 4.
- 2 am ET: UK data.
- 3 am ET: London opens. Volume jumps.
- 7 am ET: BoE decision days.
- 8 am – noon ET: the London–New York overlap.
- After noon ET: slower.
Its personality
- Livelier than the euro. The pound often moves more in a day than EUR/USD. See EUR/USD vs GBP/USD.
- Early starts. Big UK news lands while the US sleeps.
- Spikes on surprises. A BoE vote split or an inflation miss can move it fast.
- Physically delivered. Pounds are delivered at expiry. Most traders roll before. See Contract rollover.
Reading it with our method
- Daily chart first. Mark the last places price turned around. Higher highs and higher lows, or lower ones?
- Drop to your entry chart in that direction only.
- Body-close rule. UK data candles leave long tails at 2 am ET. Only a candle body closing past a level counts.
- Stop first, size second. Example: a 30-pip stop is 30 ticks × $6.25 = $187.50 of risk per contract. If your plan says $100, the micro fits better. A math example, not a promise.
Use the futures tick value calculator before each trade.
Common mistakes
- Sizing like a forex lot. A 6B tick is $6.25, not $10. Do the real math.
- Sleeping through 2 am ET data. Know what's due before holding overnight.
- Trading the BoE at 7 am ET without a plan.
- Forgetting the quarterly roll.
Questions
How much is one tick on 6B?
$6.25. The tick is 0.0001 dollars per pound on 62,500 pounds.
Is 6B the same as GBP/USD?
It tracks the same exchange rate. The difference is the wrapper: a fixed-size, exchange-traded contract with quarterly expiry, instead of a forex position.
What time does the Bank of England announce rates?
Usually at noon UK time, which is usually 7 am ET, 8 times a year.
Is there a smaller pound futures contract?
Yes. The micro British pound contract is 6,250 pounds, one-tenth of 6B. Check cmegroup.com for its tick value.
