BTC futures explained: how CME bitcoin futures work
CME bitcoin futures let you trade bitcoin's price without holding a single coin. Since May 2026 they trade around the clock, just like bitcoin itself.

How it works
One contract covers 5 bitcoin. So each $1 move in bitcoin's price is $5 per contract, and each $5 tick is $25.
Bitcoin often moves $1,000 or more in a day. On one BTC contract, a $1,000 move is $5,000. That's why many traders use the micro contract (MBT), which is one-fiftieth the size.
No coins change hands. At expiry, the contract settles in cash against the BRR, a bitcoin price CME and CF Benchmarks build from big exchanges' trades in the hour before 4 pm London time.
Monthly expiry. Contracts expire on the last Friday of the month. Most traders roll to the next month before then. See Contract rollover.
The new 24/7 hours
From May 29, 2026, CME's crypto futures trade around the clock.
- Weekdays: a 2-minute maintenance break, 5:00–5:02 pm ET.
- Weekends: a 2-hour break early Saturday, 3:00–5:00 am ET.
- Weekend trades carry the next business day's date for clearing.
Before this, CME bitcoin futures closed for the weekend while bitcoin kept trading. That left the well-known "CME gap" on Monday charts. With 24/7 trading, those gaps should mostly disappear from new charts, but they still show on older history.
What moves it
- Bitcoin's own market. The futures follow the spot price on big exchanges very closely.
- Spot bitcoin ETFs. US spot bitcoin ETFs started trading in January 2024. Big money flows in or out of them often show up in price. See bitcoin ETFs explained.
- The Fed and the dollar. Bitcoin has often traded like a risk asset. Rate news at 2:00 pm ET can move it.
- Stock market mood. On big risk-off days, bitcoin has often fallen with the Nasdaq.
- Crypto news. Exchange problems, regulation and hacks can move it at any hour.
When it's busiest
Bitcoin trades all the time, but CME volume is highest when US markets are open, about 8:30 am to 4:00 pm ET. Weekends are usually thinner on CME, even with 24/7 trading.
Its personality
- Big swings. Bitcoin can move several percent in hours.
- Basis. Futures often trade a little above spot, because holding a coin until expiry has a cost. That gap is called the basis.
- Thinner weekends. Expect wider spreads and jumpier fills on Saturday and Sunday.
- Regulated and margined. Your broker sets the margin. It's usually large on BTC.
Reading it with our method
- Daily and 4-hour charts first. Mark the last places price turned around. Is bitcoin making higher highs and higher lows, or lower ones?
- Trade with that direction. Fighting a strong bitcoin trend on a small chart is how small risks get big.
- Body-close rule. Bitcoin loves long tails. Only a candle body closing past a level counts.
- Stop first, size second. Example: your stop is $800 away. That's $800 × 5 = $4,000 of risk per BTC contract. If your plan says $200, BTC is far too big, and even MBT ($400 at that stop) needs a tighter plan. A math example, not a promise.
Use the futures tick value calculator every time.
Common mistakes
- Starting on the full contract. 5 bitcoin is a big position. The micro exists for a reason.
- Using old gap charts as signals. Pre-2026 weekend gaps came from the old closed hours.
- Forgetting the monthly expiry. Roll before the last Friday or the contract settles to cash.
- Ignoring weekend thinness. 24/7 doesn't mean equally busy all the time.
