Hedera (HBAR) explained: the council-run network, and what moves it
Hedera isn't run by anonymous miners. It's governed by a council of large companies and universities. Some see that as a strength, some as a weakness, and both views move its chart.
At a glance
| Item | Hedera (HBAR) |
|---|---|
| What it is | A public network using "hashgraph" instead of a classic blockchain, governed by a council of organisations |
| Price step | Set by each exchange, often $0.00001 |
| What a move is worth | Depends on size: 1,000 HBAR × a $0.02 move = $20 |
| Busiest hours (ET) | Roughly 8:00 am–noon weekdays, when Europe and the US overlap |
| What moves it most | Bitcoin's direction, enterprise and partnership news, ETF flows, council news |
| Trading hours | 24 hours a day, 7 days a week |
What it is, briefly
Hedera uses hashgraph, a system invented by Leemon Baird. Nodes share information by "gossiping" with each other, then agree on the order of events. Hedera's main network opened to the public in 2019.
It's governed by the Hedera Council, a group of large companies and universities that run nodes and vote on decisions. HBAR holders can also stake to help secure the network.
Fees are set in US dollar terms, so they stay steady and tiny. That appeals to companies that need to plan costs.
Supply: fixed at 50 billion HBAR, all created at the start and released over time.
The first US spot HBAR ETF began trading on Nasdaq on October 28, 2025.
What moves it
- Bitcoin. HBAR follows crypto's bigger direction most days.
- Enterprise news. Council members, pilots with big firms and tokenisation projects get headlines.
- ETF flows. Money moving in or out of HBAR funds can matter, mostly in US market hours.
- Release of supply. HBAR held by the treasury is released over time. Large releases get noticed.
- The Fed and risk mood. FOMC at 2:00 pm ET, CPI at 8:30 am ET.
When it's busiest
Weekday hours when Europe and the US overlap, roughly 8:00 am to noon ET, usually carry the most activity. Since ETFs trade 9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET, fund flows land in US hours. Weekends are thinner.
Its personality
- Quiet, then sudden. HBAR can sit still for long periods, then move a lot on one headline.
- Headline-heavy. Partnership rumours spread fast and often get walked back.
- Moves with "payments and enterprise" coins like XRP and XLM at times.
- Long tails in thin hours.
Reading it with our method
Start with bitcoin's daily chart, then HBAR's. Mark the last places price turned around. Trade in HBAR's bigger direction.
Rumour spikes are common. Wait for a candle body to close past a turning point, not just a tail poking through it.
Size from the stop. Example with made-up numbers: risk $30, stop $0.03 away. $30 ÷ $0.03 = 1,000 HBAR. The position size calculator does this for you. A math example, not a promise.
Common mistakes
- Trading rumours. "Big company X is using Hedera" posts are often wrong or old news. Check the source.
- Assuming council = price support. Big names govern the network. That doesn't hold up the price.
- Ignoring ETF hours. Fund-driven moves cluster in US market hours.
- Too-tight stops during quiet ranges, then getting caught by the burst.
