What is momentum in trading?
In one line: Momentum is how fast and how strongly price is moving in one direction. Strong momentum means big, steady moves; fading momentum means the moves are shrinking.
A simple way to measure it
The basic momentum formula compares today's close with the close a set number of periods ago:
- Momentum = today's close − the close 10 periods ago
Close today: $105. Close 10 days ago: $98. Momentum = +7.
Next week the close is $106 and 10 days before that was $104. Momentum = +2. Price is still higher, but the climb has slowed a lot.
Indicators like RSI and MACD are more polished ways of measuring the same thing.
Reading it on the chart, no indicator needed
You can see momentum in the candles themselves:
- Strong: big candle bodies in one direction, small wicks, pushes past each turning point with ease.
- Fading: smaller bodies, longer wicks, new highs that only just beat the last one.
- Turning: big bodies start showing up the other way.
Volume often helps too. Big moves on heavy volume show more conviction than big moves on light volume.
Why it matters
Momentum helps you judge the health of a Trend. A trend with strong momentum often keeps going. A trend whose pushes keep shrinking may be about to pause or turn.
It's also why "buy what's falling because it's cheap" can be risky. Strong downward momentum can keep going longer than seems reasonable.
A common mistake
Jumping in after the biggest candle. A huge green candle shows strong momentum, but it also means you're buying far from any sensible place for a stop. Your risk gets big, or your stop gets too tight.
When momentum is strong, wait for the next small Pullback. You join the same move with a closer, chart-based stop.
When momentum and price disagree, that's Divergence. The MACD guide shows one popular momentum tool in detail, and FOMO trading covers the urge to chase big candles.
Questions
What is a momentum indicator?
A tool that measures how fast price is changing. Common ones are RSI, MACD, the stochastic oscillator and the simple momentum (rate of change) line.
What is momentum trading?
A style that trades in the direction of strong moves, expecting them to continue for a while. It needs clear exits, because momentum can fade quickly.
Is momentum the same as volatility?
No. Volatility is how much price moves in either direction. Momentum is how strongly it moves in one direction. A choppy market can be volatile with little momentum.
