What is a trend in trading?
In one line: A trend is the general direction price moves over time. Up means higher highs and higher lows; down means lower highs and lower lows.
A simple example
Look at the last places price turned around on a chart.
| Turning point | Uptrend | Downtrend |
|---|---|---|
| Highs | $50 → $53 → $56 | $56 → $53 → $50 |
| Lows | $48 → $51 → $54 | $54 → $51 → $48 |
In the uptrend, each top is higher than the one before (higher highs), and each dip stops higher too. In the downtrend, it's the reverse. If the tops and dips go nowhere, that's a range — no trend at all.
When does a trend end?
An uptrend is in trouble when price breaks below its last higher low with a candle body close. In the table, that's a close under $54. That's the first sign the pattern of higher lows has stopped.
Traders call that a change of character. It doesn't promise a new downtrend. It only says the old one is no longer clear.

Why it matters
A trend tells you which side the market currently favors. Buying dips in an uptrend means trading with the flow. Buying in a downtrend means betting it turns — harder, and less often right.
A common mistake
Reading a trend from one big candle. One strong green day isn't an uptrend. A trend needs at least two higher highs and two higher lows to be visible.
Different charts can show different trends. A 5-minute chart can trend down inside a daily uptrend. Check the bigger chart first — see multiple timeframe analysis.

Questions
How long does a trend last?
There's no set length. Some last hours on a small chart, some last years on a weekly chart.
Is "the trend is your friend" true?
It's a reminder to trade with the direction you can see, not a promise. Trends end, and any trade can lose.
What's the difference between a trend and market structure?
Market structure is the pattern of turning points. The trend is the direction that pattern shows.
