What is a change of character (CHoCH)?

In one line: A change of character is the first time price closes past the last turning point against the trend. It warns the trend may be ending.

A simple example

A stock has been in an uptrend. Its turning points look like this: lows at $80, then $84, then $87. Highs at $86, $90, $93.

Price drops from $93. A daily candle's body closes at $86.40, below the last low at $87. For the first time, the pattern of higher lows is broken. That's a change of character, often shortened to "CHoCH."

A change of character: the first close below the last low in an uptrend. An illustration, not a result.

Why it matters

A change of character is an early warning. The side that was in control just lost a level it had defended. It's a reason to stop buying the dips and to protect any open buy trades.

It is not proof that a downtrend has started. Price might close below $87 and then climb right back above it. Many traders wait for more: a lower high, then a close below the next low. That second break is a Break of structure in the new direction, and it confirms the turn.

How it differs from a BOS

Same kind of event, opposite meaning. The full side-by-side is in BOS vs CHoCH.

A common mistake

Selling the moment a CHoCH appears. The first close against the trend often comes after a long run, right into a Support zone. Selling there can mean selling the low of a pullback. Treat it as "stop and watch," not "flip sides."

The other mistake is counting a Wick. A spike below $87 that closes back above it is not a change of character.

Questions

What does CHoCH mean in trading?

Change of character: the first time price closes past the last high or low against the trend, a sign the trend may be ending.

Is a CHoCH a reversal signal?

It's a warning, not a confirmation. Many traders wait for a new lower high (or higher low) and a second break before treating the trend as turned.

Can a CHoCH happen on any timeframe?

Yes, but one on a 5-minute chart means far less than one on the daily. Check the bigger chart first. See how to identify a trend.
