What is a higher high in trading?
In one line: A higher high is a turning point at the top of a move that sits above the previous one. Higher highs plus higher lows make an uptrend.
A simple example
Picture a chart that zigzags upward. Price rises to $25 and turns down. It dips to $23, then rises to $27 and turns down again.
The peak at $27 is above the peak at $25. That's a higher high. The dip to $23 was the low between them. If the next dip stops at $24.50, above $23, that's a higher low, and the uptrend is intact.
The four related terms:
- Higher high (HH): a peak above the last peak.
- Higher low (HL): a dip that stops above the last dip.
- Lower high (LH): a peak below the last peak.
- Lower low (LL): a dip below the last dip.
Why it matters
Higher highs show buyers are strong enough to push past the last place sellers took over. Each one is like a staircase step. As long as the steps keep going up, the trend is up.
The higher lows matter just as much. They show where buyers keep stepping in. Many traders plan buys near a new higher low, with the Stop loss just under it. That gives a clear point where the idea is wrong. The position size calculator then turns that stop into a trade size.
When it doesn't count
In our method, a new high only counts when a candle body closes above the last peak. A Wick that pokes above and falls back is just a test. If price wicks to $27.20 but closes at $26.80, under a $27 peak, no higher high was made yet.
A common mistake
Seeing a higher high and buying right there. The new peak is often the most stretched point of the move. Buying at the top of the staircase step means a wide stop and a likely pullback. Waiting for the next higher low usually gives a calmer entry. More in higher highs and higher lows.
Questions
What is the difference between a higher high and a break of structure?
They're closely linked. When price closes above the last peak in an uptrend, it makes a higher high, and that close is called a Break of structure.
How many higher highs make an uptrend?
At least two higher highs and two higher lows in a row give you a clear pattern. Fewer than that is too early to call.
What happens after a lower low in an uptrend?
It's a warning that the uptrend may be ending, called a Change of character. Many traders stop buying and wait to see what forms next.
