What is a pump and dump scheme?

In one line: A pump and dump is a scam where people hype up a cheap stock or coin to push its price up, then sell their shares to the buyers they lured in.

What it means

A pump and dump is a scam in 2 steps:

  1. Pump. A group buys a cheap stock or coin. Then they hype it everywhere: posts, chats, emails, videos. New buyers rush in and the price jumps.
  2. Dump. The group sells into all that buying. The price crashes. The late buyers are left with the loss.

The hype was never about the business. It was about finding buyers.

Is it illegal?

Yes, in US stocks it's securities fraud. Pushing up a price with false or misleading claims, then selling, is market manipulation. The SEC brings cases against pump-and-dump schemes. Some crypto tokens count as securities and the same laws can apply. The SEC's investor site, Investor.gov, has alerts on this scam.

Warning signs

If someone needs you to buy right now, ask why they're in such a hurry to find buyers.

A simple example

A $0.20 stock nobody talks about suddenly fills group chats. "This one's going to $2!" Volume jumps 50 times its normal level. The price hits $0.60 in two days.

Then it falls back to $0.15 in an afternoon. The promoters sold near the top. Many late buyers become Bag holders. This is a described example of the pattern, not a real ticker.
