What are 0DTE options?

In one line: 0DTE (zero days to expiration) options are options traded on the same day they expire, so their whole life plays out in hours.

Trading glossary · Updated 2026-10-21

A simple example

DTE means "days to expiration." A 0DTE option expires today. By the close it's worth something real, or nothing.

Some index and big ETF options, like S&P 500 index options, now have an Expiration date every weekday. That's what made 0DTE trading common.

Here's an illustration. At 11:00 am, a call that expires today costs $1.50. The index jumps, and by noon the call is worth $4.00. Then the index drifts back. By 3:30 pm the call is worth $0.10.

Same option. Same day. Up over 160%, then down over 90%. A math example, not a promise.

Why it matters

Two Greeks are extreme on expiration day:

That's why 0DTE options look cheap. They're cheap because there's so little time for anything to happen.

A common mistake

Treating a cheap option as small risk. A $1.50 option can still go to zero in an hour. Bought options can lose 100% of what you paid. Sold 0DTE options can lose far more than the premium collected.

0DTE is the fastest, riskiest corner of options. If you ever try it, size it from a fixed daily loss limit, and practice on paper first.

Many traders size each trade so a full loss is a small, set amount. The position size calculator helps with that.

Questions

Are 0DTE options good for beginners?

They're very hard to handle. Prices move fast, there's no time to recover, and a full loss can happen within minutes. Learn options on longer dates first.

Why are 0DTE options so popular?

They're cheap per contract and react strongly to small moves, so they feel exciting. The same features make them extremely risky.

What happens to a 0DTE option at the close?

If it's out of the money, it expires worthless. If it's in the money, it's usually settled or exercised, depending on the product and your broker's rules.
