6J futures explained: Japanese yen futures vs USD/JPY
Pull up a 6J chart next to USD/JPY and they look like mirror images. That's not a mistake. Yen futures price the yen in dollars, so everything is flipped.

The flip: 6J vs USD/JPY
USD/JPY shows how many yen one dollar buys, like 150. 6J shows how many dollars one yen buys, like 0.0066667. They're the same exchange rate, turned over.
- USD/JPY up = yen weaker = 6J down.
- USD/JPY down = yen stronger = 6J up.
So "buying 6J" is a bet on a stronger yen. Get this wrong once and you're trading the opposite of your idea.

What moves it
The Bank of Japan (BoJ). It meets 8 times a year. Decisions usually come out in the Tokyo morning or around midday, which is late evening or night in ET. There's no fixed minute.
The Fed. The FOMC at 2:00 pm ET. US rate news often moves the yen more than Japanese news.
The rate gap. Japanese rates have stayed far below US rates for years. That gap makes the yen a favourite funding currency for the Carry trade: borrow yen cheaply, hold something that pays more. When those trades unwind, the yen can jump. That happened in early August 2024.
Intervention. Japan's Ministry of Finance has bought yen to slow sharp drops, in 2022 and again in 2024. Intervention can move the yen several percent in minutes, often without warning.
Risk mood. In a scare, the yen often strengthens. That's the Safe haven habit, and it doesn't always hold.
When it's busiest
Tokyo is 13 hours ahead of New York in summer and 14 in winter. Japan doesn't change its clocks.
- About 7 pm – 3 am ET: Tokyo's day. BoJ news lands here.
- 3 am ET: London adds volume.
- 8:30 am ET: US data.
- 8 am – noon ET: the busiest stretch.
Its personality
- Calm, then violent. The yen can trend steadily for months, then reverse hard on intervention or a carry unwind.
- Small tick, lots of ticks. At $6.25 a tick, a normal day covers many ticks. Count in dollars.
- Physically delivered. At expiry, yen are actually delivered. Most traders roll before. See Contract rollover.
Reading it with our method
- Flip check first. Write down: "I'm betting the yen gets stronger" (buy 6J) or "weaker" (sell 6J).
- Daily chart. Mark the last places price turned around on 6J itself. Don't read the USD/JPY chart and trade 6J without flipping.
- Body-close rule. Intervention candles leave giant tails. Only a candle body closing past a level counts.
- Stop first, size second. Example: your stop is 40 ticks away. 40 × $6.25 = $250 of risk per contract. If your plan says $100, one contract is too big, and the micro yen contract may fit. A math example, not a promise.
The futures tick value calculator handles any contract.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the flip. It's the single most common 6J error.
- Ignoring intervention risk. When officials start warning about the yen, size down.
- Trading the BoJ blind. Its decision time varies. Check before holding overnight.
- Holding into delivery. Roll before the contract's last trading day.
