Arbitrum (ARB) explained: Ethereum's big layer 2, and what moves ARB
Arbitrum is a busy express lane for Ethereum. Lots of people use it every day, but most never touch ARB, its token. Knowing that gap is the first step to reading this chart.
At a glance
| Item | Arbitrum (ARB) |
|---|---|
| What it is | The governance token of Arbitrum, a "layer 2" network that runs on top of Ethereum |
| Price step | Set by each exchange, often $0.0001 |
| What a move is worth | Depends on size: 100 ARB × a $0.20 move = $20 |
| Busiest hours (ET) | Roughly 8:00 am–noon weekdays, when Europe and the US overlap |
| What moves it most | Ethereum's direction, token unlocks, network activity, DAO spending votes |
| Trading hours | 24 hours a day, 7 days a week |
What it is, briefly
Arbitrum is built by Offchain Labs. Its main network, Arbitrum One, opened to the public in 2021.
It's an optimistic rollup. In plain words: it bundles lots of transactions together and posts a summary to Ethereum. It assumes the bundle is honest, but gives anyone a window to challenge a wrong one. That makes trades much cheaper than on Ethereum itself.
Fees on Arbitrum are paid in ETH, not ARB. ARB is used to vote on how the network and its treasury are run.
ARB launched in March 2023 with an airdrop (free tokens) to early users and DAOs. Supply started at 10 billion ARB, with up to 2% yearly inflation allowed if holders vote for it.
What moves it
- Ethereum. ARB tends to follow ETH and the "layer 2" mood.
- Unlocks. Large blocks of ARB for the team and investors unlock on a schedule. Those dates get watched.
- Activity. More apps and users on Arbitrum help the story, though fees go to ETH, not ARB.
- DAO votes. Spending from the big treasury, and any votes on the token's role, get attention.
- The Fed and risk mood. FOMC at 2:00 pm ET, CPI at 8:30 am ET.
When it's busiest
Weekday hours when Europe and the US overlap, roughly 8:00 am to noon ET, usually carry the most activity. Weekends are thinner.
US data times stay fixed in ET. Europe's hours shift against ET for a few weeks each spring and fall.
Its personality
- Heavy supply. Unlocks have added a lot of tokens to the market over time.
- Moves with other layer 2 tokens like OP, often together.
- Rallies that fade when the story moves on.
- Long tails in thin hours.
Reading it with our method
Check Ethereum's daily chart, then ARB's. Mark the last places price turned around. In a downtrend, a bounce isn't a turn until a candle body closes above the last high point.
Size from the stop. Example with made-up numbers: risk $30, stop $0.30 away. $30 ÷ $0.30 = 100 ARB. The position size calculator does it for you. A math example, not a promise.

Common mistakes
- Thinking network use = ARB demand. Fees are paid in ETH. ARB's value depends on other things.
- Missing unlock dates. Check them before you plan a trade.
- Falling for fake airdrops. "Claim your ARB" links are a common way to drain wallets.
- Sending to the wrong network. ETH on Arbitrum and ETH on Ethereum use the same addresses but different networks. Check before you send.
Questions
What is Arbitrum?
A layer 2 network that runs on top of Ethereum. It bundles transactions to make them faster and cheaper, while still relying on Ethereum for security.
What is the ARB token used for?
Voting on how Arbitrum is run and how its treasury is spent. Network fees are paid in ETH, not ARB.
What is the total supply of ARB?
It started at 10 billion ARB in March 2023. Holders can vote to add up to 2% a year.
What is an optimistic rollup?
A layer 2 that assumes transaction bundles are honest but gives anyone time to prove one wrong. That's why moving funds back to Ethereum through the official bridge can take days.
