Optimism (OP) explained: the Superchain token, and what moves it
Optimism isn't just one network. Its free code, the OP Stack, is used by other chains too, and the project calls that family the Superchain. The OP token's story rides on how that family does.
At a glance
| Item | Optimism (OP) |
|---|---|
| What it is | The governance token of Optimism, a layer 2 network on Ethereum, and the wider "Superchain" |
| Price step | Set by each exchange, often $0.0001 |
| What a move is worth | Depends on size: 50 OP × a $0.40 move = $20 |
| Busiest hours (ET) | Roughly 8:00 am–noon weekdays, when Europe and the US overlap |
| What moves it most | Ethereum's direction, token unlocks, Superchain news, governance votes |
| Trading hours | 24 hours a day, 7 days a week |
What it is, briefly
Optimism is an optimistic rollup: it bundles Ethereum transactions, posts them to Ethereum, and allows a window for anyone to challenge a wrong bundle. That makes transactions much cheaper. Its main network, OP Mainnet, opened to everyone in late 2021.
The OP Stack is Optimism's open-source code. Other teams use it to launch their own layer 2 chains. Together, chains sharing this code are called the Superchain.
Fees on OP Mainnet are paid in ETH. OP is used for governance.
OP launched with an airdrop (free tokens) in May 2022. Its starting supply was about 4.29 billion OP, with 2% new supply a year planned. In 2026 holders approved a trial using part of Superchain revenue to buy OP back.
What moves it
- Ethereum. OP usually moves with ETH and the layer 2 mood.
- Superchain news. Big chains joining or leaving the OP Stack family can matter a lot.
- Unlocks. Team and investor tokens unlock on a schedule. Watch those dates.
- Governance. Buyback and spending votes change the token's role.
- The Fed and risk mood. FOMC at 2:00 pm ET, CPI at 8:30 am ET.
When it's busiest
The busiest stretch is usually weekday hours when Europe and the US overlap, about 8:00 am to noon ET. Weekends are thinner.
Its personality
- Paired with ARB. OP and ARB are rivals and often swing together.
- News about partners hits hard. Because so much of the story is other chains using the code, their decisions move OP.
- Supply pressure from unlocks and planned inflation.
- Long tails on thin weekends.
Reading it with our method
Look at Ethereum's daily chart, then OP's. Mark the last places price turned around. Trade OP with its own bigger direction.
When news about a partner chain hits, wait. Only a candle body closing past a turning point counts, not a fast tail.
Size from the stop. Example with made-up numbers: risk $30, stop $0.60 away. $30 ÷ $0.60 = 50 OP. Use the position size calculator. A math example, not a promise.

Common mistakes
- Assuming every OP Stack chain helps OP. Other chains using the code don't automatically send value to the token.
- Ignoring unlocks and inflation. Supply keeps growing.
- Fake airdrop links. "Claim OP" sites drain wallets. Never sign what you don't understand.
- Trading OP without checking ARB. The two often move as a pair.
Questions
What is Optimism?
A layer 2 network that runs on top of Ethereum to make transactions faster and cheaper. Its code, the OP Stack, is also used by other chains.
What is the Superchain?
The group of layer 2 chains built on Optimism's OP Stack code, which aim to share standards and work together.
What is the OP token used for?
Voting on how Optimism and the Superchain are run. Fees on OP Mainnet are paid in ETH.
Is Optimism the same as Arbitrum?
No. Both are optimistic rollups on Ethereum, but they're built by different teams, with different code and different tokens.
