Coinbase stock (COIN): what moves it and how to read it
Crypto trades all weekend. Coinbase stock doesn't. So COIN often opens Monday trying to catch up with two days of bitcoin.
This page explains how the stock tends to move. It isn't a recommendation to buy or sell it.

What the company does
Coinbase lets people buy and sell crypto, and keeps it safe for them (custody). Many US spot bitcoin ETFs use it as custodian.
It earns two main ways. Transaction revenue is fees on trades. It rises when crypto is busy and falls when it's quiet. Subscription and services revenue includes interest-like income tied to USDC, a dollar stablecoin, plus staking and other services. In 2025 it bought Deribit, a big crypto options exchange.
What moves it
- Crypto prices. When bitcoin and other coins jump or slide, COIN usually follows, often harder.
- Trading volume. Busy crypto markets mean more fees. Quiet months show up in the report.
- Stablecoins. USDC balances and interest rates feed its services income. A US stablecoin law, the GENIUS Act, was signed in July 2025.
- Regulation. The SEC sued Coinbase in 2023 and dropped the case in February 2025. Rule changes, in the US and abroad, can still move it.
- Earnings and guidance. See Earnings report.
- Security news. Hacks, outages or data incidents at exchanges can hit the stock quickly.
When it's busiest
- Monday mornings: weekend crypto moves get priced in at 9:30 am ET. A Gap is common.
- The morning after earnings: results come out after 4:00 pm ET.
- 9:30–10:30 am ET: the open.
- Fed and CPI days: crypto often reacts to rate news, and COIN with it. See CPI and FOMC days.
US stock hours stay 9:30 am–4:00 pm ET all year. Crypto trades 24/7. Extended-hours times depend on your broker.
Its personality
- Crypto with leverage built in. Because fees rise and fall with activity, COIN has often moved more than bitcoin in both directions.
- Weekend catch-up. The stock is closed while crypto keeps moving.
- Headline-heavy. Rule changes, court cases and exchange news are frequent.
- Big swings in volume. On hot crypto days, COIN can be one of the most traded US stocks.
Reading it with our method
Use two charts. First, bitcoin's daily chart: mark the last places price turned around and note the direction. Then COIN's daily chart. When both point the same way, the read is cleaner.
On your entry chart, only a candle body closing past a level counts. Monday opens often paint long tails.
Set the stop from the chart, then size from the stop. Fast stocks need wide stops and smaller size. Example: your stop is $15 below your entry and your plan risks $75. That's $75 ÷ $15 = 5 shares. The position size calculator does the math. A math example, not a promise. Any trade can lose, and a Monday gap can skip your stop.
COIN is a stock about crypto, not crypto itself. Owning it doesn't mean owning any coins. See crypto vs stocks.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring the weekend. Holding big size from Friday to Monday means two days of crypto risk with no way out.
- Thinking COIN equals bitcoin. It often moves with crypto, but costs, rules and volume make it different.
- Chasing hot crypto days. Fast spikes can reverse fast. See crypto volatility explained.
- Sizing like a calm stock. Use the same risk in dollars, which means fewer shares.
Questions
Is Coinbase in the S&P 500?
Yes. Coinbase joined the S&P 500 on May 19, 2025, the first crypto-focused company to do so. It is not in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
Why does Coinbase stock move more than bitcoin?
Coinbase earns more when crypto is busy and less when it's quiet. So a change in crypto prices can change its expected earnings by even more, and the stock reacts to that.
When does Coinbase report earnings?
Four times a year, after the US market closes, usually in February, May, August, and late October or early November. Check Coinbase's investor site for exact dates.
Does Coinbase stock trade on weekends?
No. COIN trades during US stock hours, plus pre-market and after-hours sessions on weekdays. Crypto itself trades 24/7, which is why Monday gaps are common.
