Cosmos (ATOM) explained: the "internet of blockchains", and ATOM

Cosmos isn't one blockchain. It's a toolkit plus a way for chains to talk to each other. Lots of projects use it, and that raises the big question for ATOM: how much of that success flows back to it?

What it is, briefly

Cosmos raised money in a 2017 token sale. The Cosmos Hub, its first main chain, launched in March 2019.

Three pieces matter:

ATOM is staked to secure the Cosmos Hub and is used for governance votes.

Supply: ATOM has no fixed cap. New ATOM is issued to stakers. In November 2023, holders narrowly passed Proposal 848, lowering the maximum inflation to 10% a year. The vote was contested, and Cosmos co-founder Jae Kwon responded by starting a separate chain called AtomOne.

What moves it

When it's busiest

The busiest stretch is usually weekday hours when Europe and the US overlap, roughly 8:00 am to noon ET. Weekends are thinner.

Remember: US data times stay fixed in ET, while Europe's hours shift against ET for a few weeks each year.

Its personality

Reading it with our method

Check bitcoin's daily chart first, then ATOM's. Mark the last places price turned around. Trade with ATOM's bigger direction.

Only a candle body closing past a turning point counts. Governance-news days can leave long Wicks.

Size from the stop. Example with made-up numbers: risk $30, stop $1.50 away. $30 ÷ $1.50 = 20 ATOM. Use the position size calculator. A math example, not a promise.

Questions

What is Cosmos used for?

Building blockchains and connecting them. Its toolkit helps teams launch chains, and IBC lets those chains send tokens and data to each other.

What is the ATOM token used for?

Staking to secure the Cosmos Hub and voting on its rules. It's also used across many Cosmos-connected apps.

Does ATOM have a max supply?

No. New ATOM is issued to stakers. Since a November 2023 vote, inflation is capped at a maximum of 10% a year.

What is IBC in crypto?

The Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol, a standard that lets separate blockchains send tokens and messages to each other.
