What the company does
Palantir sells software platforms. Gotham is used mostly by governments and defense agencies. Foundry is used by companies to organize their data.
Its AI Platform (AIP) lets customers use AI models on their own data. A big share of its sales comes from the US government, and its business with US companies has been growing fast.
What moves it
- US commercial growth. How fast sales to US businesses grow is often the headline number in its Earnings report.
- Government contracts. Large defense or agency deals can move it on the day they're announced. Government budget fights can weigh on it.
- Guidance. Its full-year sales forecast and how often it raises it.
- AI mood. It often moves with the market's excitement or worry about AI as a whole.
- Expectations. The stock has been priced for a lot of future growth. When the bar is that high, even good news can disappoint.
When it's busiest
- 9:30–10:30 am ET: the open, often the most volatile part of the day.
- 3:00–4:00 pm ET: the close.
- Earnings night: after 4:00 pm ET. The full reaction often shows in the next day's open.
US stock hours stay 9:30 am–4:00 pm ET all year. Extended-hours times depend on your broker.
Its personality
- Big swings. Daily moves can be several times those of a steady large company. See Volatility.
- Heavy retail interest. Lots of individual traders follow it. That can make moves overshoot both ways.
- Fast trends, sharp pullbacks. Strong runs have been followed by deep drops. A Pullback can look like a crash on a small chart.
- Index joins mattered. Joining big indexes brought in index funds that must own it.
Reading it with our method
Start on the daily chart. On a stock this fast, the bigger chart keeps you from reacting to every wiggle. Mark the last places price turned around and find the direction.
On your entry chart, only a candle body closing past a level counts. PLTR leaves lots of long tails on news days.
Wide swings need wide stops, and wide stops need small size. Example: your stop is $7 away and your plan risks $70. That's $70 ÷ $7 = 10 shares. Use the position size calculator. A math example, not a promise. Losses are always possible, and gaps can jump past stops.
Common mistakes
- Sizing it like a calm stock. The same share count can mean far more risk. Size from the stop.
- Chasing a contract headline. News spikes often pull back. Wait for a close at a level.
- Holding big size into earnings. Its gaps can be large either way.
- Loving the story. A great story doesn't change the math of your stop. See FOMO trading.
