Salesforce stock (CRM): what moves it, explained simply
Salesforce sells software by subscription, so its future is mostly signed in advance. That's why CRM's biggest moves come from one line in each report: what's coming next.
This page explains how the stock tends to move. It isn't a recommendation to buy or sell it.

What the company does
Salesforce's main product is customer relationship management (CRM) software, which is also its ticker. Sales teams log deals in it. Service teams answer customers with it.
It has grown by buying companies: Tableau (charts and data), Slack (team chat), MuleSoft (connecting apps) and, in late 2025, Informatica (data management). Its newest push is Agentforce, AI "agents" that can handle tasks like answering customer questions.
What moves it
- Guidance. Subscriptions are signed ahead, so the outlook for the coming year is watched closely. See Guidance.
- Remaining performance obligation. A long name for "contracts signed but not yet billed." It hints at future sales.
- AI news. Does AI help Salesforce sell more, or let customers need fewer software seats? The market has gone back and forth on this. Agentforce numbers get a lot of attention.
- Deals. Big buyouts can move the stock on the announcement day, sometimes down.
- Earnings. Salesforce's fiscal year ends January 31, so "fiscal 2027" mostly covers 2026. See Earnings report.
- Software sector mood. Reports from other software firms, like Oracle and Adobe, can move CRM in sympathy.
When it's busiest
- The morning after earnings: results come out after 4:00 pm ET. The full reaction shows at the next open.
- 9:30–10:30 am ET: the open.
- 3:00–4:00 pm ET: the close.
US stock hours stay 9:30 am–4:00 pm ET all year. Extended-hours times depend on your broker.
Its personality
- Calm, then a jump. CRM often moves quietly for weeks, then gaps on its report.
- Story-sensitive. Big swings in how the market feels about AI and software have hit it hard both ways.
- Moves with software peers. A sector-wide selloff in software often drags CRM along.
- A Dow member. It joined the Dow in 2020, one of its few pure software names.
Reading it with our method
Start on the daily chart. Mark the last places price turned around. Are the highs and lows stepping up or stepping down? Trade with that direction.
Then go to your entry chart. Only a candle body closing past a level counts. The first candles after an earnings gap are often messy.
Set the stop from the chart, then size from the stop. Example: your stop is $6 below your entry and your plan risks $90. That's $90 ÷ $6 = 15 shares. Use the position size calculator. A math example, not a promise. Any trade can lose.
Common mistakes
- Using the wrong year. Salesforce's fiscal year runs February to January.
- Watching revenue, ignoring the outlook. A strong quarter with a soft forecast can still drop.
- Holding full size into earnings. A gap can jump past your stop. See gap trading explained.
- Trading AI headlines. "AI" news is loud. The chart's body closes are quieter and more useful.
