Sui (SUI) explained: the fast chain, and what moves it
Sui was built by engineers who first worked on Meta's crypto project. In 2025 its validators froze stolen funds after a hack, and that one decision says a lot about the chain.
At a glance
| Item | Sui (SUI) |
|---|---|
| What it is | A proof-of-stake blockchain built for speed, using the Move programming language |
| Price step | Set by each exchange, often $0.0001 |
| What a move is worth | Depends on size: 100 SUI × a $0.20 move = $20 |
| Busiest hours (ET) | Roughly 8:00 am–noon weekdays, plus Asian hours |
| What moves it most | Bitcoin's direction, token unlocks, app activity, network health |
| Trading hours | 24 hours a day, 7 days a week |
What it is, briefly
Sui is built by Mysten Labs, founded by former engineers from Meta's Diem and Novi crypto projects. Its main network launched in May 2023.
Sui treats each asset as an "object". Transactions that don't touch the same objects can run at the same time, which speeds things up. Apps are written in Move, a language first designed at Meta.
It uses proof of stake. The supply is fixed at a maximum of 10 billion SUI, released over time on a schedule.
Notable events
- November 2024: the network stopped for about two hours because of a bug. A fix was rolled out and it restarted. A longer stall of several hours happened later.
- May 2025: an attacker took over $200 million from Cetus, a big trading app on Sui. Validators blocked the attacker's addresses, freezing about $162 million. A vote then sent those funds back toward users.
Some praised the fast response. Others asked how decentralized a network is if validators can freeze funds. Both views are worth knowing.
What moves it
- Bitcoin. SUI tends to follow crypto's bigger direction, usually with bigger swings.
- Token unlocks. Much of the 10 billion supply is released over time. Large unlock dates get watched.
- App activity. Trading, games and new tokens on Sui can raise demand for SUI.
- Network health. Outages and hacks hit confidence.
- The Fed and risk mood. FOMC at 2:00 pm ET, CPI at 8:30 am ET.
When it's busiest
Weekday hours when Europe and the US overlap, roughly 8:00 am to noon ET, usually carry the most activity. Sui also has a big Asian following, so evenings ET can be busy. Weekends are thinner.
Its personality
- Young and fast-moving. Newer coins with short price histories often swing harder.
- Unlock-sensitive. New supply arriving can weigh on price around those dates.
- Event shocks. Outages and hacks have caused sudden drops.
- Long tails on thin hours.
Reading it with our method
Check bitcoin's daily chart first, then SUI's. Mark the last places price turned around. Trade in the direction SUI's bigger chart shows.
Shock candles leave long Wicks. Only a candle body closing past a turning point counts.
Size from the stop. Example with made-up numbers: risk $30, stop $0.30 away. $30 ÷ $0.30 = 100 SUI. Use the position size calculator. A math example, not a promise.
With leverage, check the force-close price with the crypto liquidation calculator. Keep your stop well inside it.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring the unlock calendar. Check when new SUI is due to be released.
- Mixing up SUI and Sui tokens. Many tokens run on Sui. They aren't SUI and are often far riskier.
- Trusting any app with your wallet. Hacks happen on fast chains too. Approve only what you understand.
- Trading the first hour after a shock. Spreads widen and moves overshoot.
Questions
Who created Sui?
Mysten Labs, a company started by former engineers from Meta's Diem crypto project. Sui's main network launched in May 2023.
What is the max supply of SUI?
10 billion SUI. Not all of it is in circulation yet; the rest is released on a schedule.
What happened with the Cetus hack on Sui?
In May 2025 an attacker drained over $200 million from Cetus, a trading app on Sui. Validators froze about $162 million, which led to a debate about decentralization.
Are Sui and Aptos the same?
No. Both were built by ex-Meta engineers and use the Move language, but they are separate networks with different designs and teams.
