Toncoin (TON) explained: the Telegram-linked coin, and what moves it
Toncoin's network was first built by Telegram, then handed to outside developers after a fight with US regulators. Today it lives inside the app again, and that tie shapes its chart.
At a glance
| Item | Toncoin (TON) |
|---|---|
| What it is | The coin of The Open Network, a blockchain closely tied to the Telegram app |
| Price step | Set by each exchange, often $0.001 |
| What a move is worth | Depends on size: 40 TON × a $0.50 move = $20 |
| Busiest hours (ET) | Roughly 8:00 am–noon weekdays, plus European and Asian hours |
| What moves it most | Telegram news, bitcoin's direction, app and wallet activity, legal headlines |
| Trading hours | 24 hours a day, 7 days a week |
What it is, briefly
TON began in 2018 as the "Telegram Open Network". Telegram raised about $1.7 billion for it.
The SEC said those token sales were unregistered securities. A US court blocked the token in March 2020. Telegram dropped the project in May 2020. In June 2020 it settled, agreeing to return more than $1.2 billion to buyers and pay an $18.5 million penalty.
Independent developers kept the code going and renamed it The Open Network. Telegram later embraced it again, with a built-in wallet and TON as the chain for its mini apps.
TON uses proof of stake. It started with about 5 billion coins, with a small amount of new TON issued to validators each year and some fees burned.
What moves it
- Telegram. Wallet features, mini app news and anything about the company tends to move TON.
- Founder news. Telegram's founder, Pavel Durov, was detained in France in August 2024. TON fell sharply that week. Legal headlines like that matter here.
- Bitcoin. TON still leans with crypto's bigger direction.
- App waves. Bursts of Telegram games and new tokens can spike activity, then fade.
- The Fed and risk mood. FOMC at 2:00 pm ET, CPI at 8:30 am ET.
When it's busiest
Telegram is used all over the world, including Eastern Europe and Asia. So TON can be active outside US hours. The usual crypto peak, when Europe and the US overlap (about 8:00 am to noon ET), is still busy.
US data times are fixed in ET, but European and Asian working hours shift against ET when clocks change.
Its personality
- One-company headline risk. Few coins are as tied to a single app. News about Telegram can move TON fast.
- Event spikes. Big app launches have pulled in waves of new users, then cooled.
- Concentrated holders. Reports have found much of the early supply ended up with a few groups. Big holders can matter. See Whale.
- Thin weekends.
Reading it with our method
Start with bitcoin's daily chart, then TON's. Mark the last places price turned around. Trade with TON's own bigger direction.
Headline candles can be huge. Wait for the dust to settle. Only a candle body closing past the last turning point counts.
Size from the stop. Example with made-up numbers: risk $30, stop $0.75 away. $30 ÷ $0.75 = 40 TON. Use the position size calculator. A math example, not a promise.
Keep a daily loss limit. News-driven coins can turn a calm day into a fast one.
Common mistakes
- Trusting "TON giveaways" in Telegram chats. Fake support and fake airdrops target TON users. Nobody real needs your seed phrase (the secret words for your wallet). Ever.
- Buying the Telegram headline. By the time the news hits, the first move is often done.
- Confusing TON with Telegram stock. Telegram the company isn't listed on a US exchange. TON is a separate crypto asset.
- Sizing the same as bitcoin. TON can need a wider stop in percent.
Questions
Is Toncoin owned by Telegram?
Not directly. Telegram built the original network, then stepped away in 2020 after an SEC case. Independent developers kept it running, and Telegram later added TON features back into the app.
Why did Toncoin drop in August 2024?
Telegram's founder, Pavel Durov, was detained in France that month, and TON fell sharply on the news. It showed how much Telegram headlines can move the coin.
How does Toncoin work?
It runs on proof of stake, where validators lock up TON to secure the network and earn a small amount of new TON.
How do I keep TON safe?
Use a trusted wallet, never share your seed phrase, and ignore DMs offering giveaways or "support". Those are common scams.
