Uniswap (UNI) explained: the DEX token, and what moves it
Uniswap lets people swap tokens with no company in the middle, using pools of coins instead of buyers and sellers. For years its token had no share of the fees. In 2025 that changed.
At a glance
| Item | Uniswap (UNI) |
|---|---|
| What it is | The governance token of Uniswap, a decentralized exchange (DEX) app on Ethereum and other networks |
| Price step | Set by each exchange, often $0.001 |
| What a move is worth | Depends on size: 20 UNI × a $1 move = $20 |
| Busiest hours (ET) | Roughly 8:00 am–noon weekdays, plus bursts when on-chain trading heats up |
| What moves it most | Ethereum's direction, trading volume on Uniswap, fee and governance votes, regulation |
| Trading hours | 24 hours a day, 7 days a week |
What it is, briefly
Uniswap launched in November 2018, created by Hayden Adams. It's a decentralized exchange: you swap tokens straight from your own wallet.
There's no order book. Instead, people put pairs of tokens into pools. A formula sets the price based on how much of each token is in the pool. Traders pay a small fee, which goes to the people who supplied the pool.
UNI arrived in September 2020. Many past users got 400 UNI each in an airdrop (free tokens). The plan was 1 billion UNI over four years, with up to 2% yearly inflation after that, decided by holders.
Key events
- April 2024: the SEC sent Uniswap Labs a Wells notice (a warning it might sue). In February 2025 the SEC closed the investigation with no action.
- December 2025: holders passed the "UNIfication" proposal with near-total support. It turned on a protocol fee that's used to burn (destroy) UNI over time, and burned 100 million UNI at once.
So UNI is now tied to Uniswap's trading activity in a way it wasn't before. How much that matters is up to the market.
What moves it
- Ethereum. UNI mostly follows ETH and the wider "DeFi" mood.
- Trading volume. More swaps on Uniswap means more fees, and now more UNI burned.
- Governance votes. Holders vote on fees, spending and upgrades.
- Regulation. Rules on decentralized exchanges and tokens can hit fast.
- The Fed and risk mood. FOMC at 2:00 pm ET, CPI at 8:30 am ET.
When it's busiest
Weekday hours when Europe and the US overlap, about 8:00 am to noon ET, are usually busiest. Uniswap itself gets busy whenever new tokens get hot, at any hour. Weekends are thinner.
Its personality
- A "DeFi bellwether". UNI often leads or follows the whole group of finance-app tokens.
- Big reactions to votes that change the token's role, then a fade.
- Swings bigger than ETH on most days, in percent.
- Thin weekends with long tails.
Reading it with our method
Look at Ethereum's daily chart first, then UNI's. Mark the last places price turned around on both. Trade UNI with its bigger direction, and be careful when ETH disagrees.
Only a candle body closing past a turning point counts. News days leave long Wicks.
Size from the stop. Example with made-up numbers: risk $30, stop $1.50 away. $30 ÷ $1.50 = 20 UNI. The position size calculator does this in seconds. A math example, not a promise.
Common mistakes
- Confusing the app with the token. Uniswap can be busy while UNI falls. Read the chart.
- Swapping on fake Uniswap sites. Phishing copies are common. Type the address yourself and never sign approvals you don't understand.
- Trading the vote result. Votes are public for days. Price usually moves before the end.
- Ignoring ETH. A UNI setup against a falling ETH chart is a harder trade.
Questions
What is Uniswap used for?
Swapping one crypto token for another straight from your wallet, with no company holding your funds. Prices come from pools of tokens, not an order book.
What does the UNI token do?
UNI is used to vote on how Uniswap is run. Since the December 2025 vote, a protocol fee is used to burn UNI over time.
Did the SEC sue Uniswap?
No. The SEC sent a Wells notice in April 2024, but closed its investigation in February 2025 without taking action.
Who created Uniswap?
Hayden Adams launched Uniswap in November 2018. The UNI token followed in September 2020.
