Aave (AAVE) explained: the crypto lending token, and what moves it

Aave is a lending app with no bank in the middle. People lock up crypto and borrow against it. When prices fall fast, the app sells their collateral automatically, and that machinery moves its token.

What it is, briefly

Aave started as ETHLend in 2017, founded by Stani Kulechov, and rebranded as Aave in 2018.

How it works: lenders put crypto into pools and earn interest. Borrowers lock up more crypto than they borrow, as collateral. If the collateral's value falls too far, anyone can repay part of the loan and take some collateral at a discount. That's a liquidation (a forced sale).

Aave also runs its own dollar Stablecoin, called GHO, launched in 2023.

Supply: fixed at 16 million AAVE. The older LEND token was swapped 100 to 1 in 2020. Since April 2025, the Aave DAO (its holders' group) has used app revenue to buy back AAVE on the market. ## What moves it

When it's busiest

The busiest stretch is usually weekday hours when Europe and the US overlap, roughly 8:00 am to noon ET. But liquidation waves can hit any hour, often during a weekend crash when markets are thin.

Its personality

Reading it with our method

Look at Ethereum's daily chart first, then AAVE's. Mark the last places price turned around. Trade with AAVE's bigger direction.

Only a candle body closing past a turning point counts. Crash days leave long Wicks that can trick you into seeing a new low or high.

Size from the stop. Example with made-up numbers: risk $30, stop $60 away. $30 ÷ $60 = 0.5 AAVE. Use the position size calculator. A math example, not a promise.

The lesson Aave teaches about borrowing

Aave's liquidations work like a margin call on autopilot. Borrow too much, and a fast drop sells your collateral for you.

The same is true on any leveraged trade. See leverage and margin explained and check your force-close price with the crypto liquidation calculator.

Common mistakes

Questions

What is Aave used for?

Lending and borrowing crypto without a bank. Lenders earn interest, borrowers lock collateral, and the app sells collateral automatically if loans get too risky.

What is the max supply of AAVE?

16 million AAVE. Since 2025, the Aave DAO has also used app revenue to buy AAVE back on the market.

What is a liquidation on Aave?

When a borrower's collateral falls too far in value, part of it is sold at a discount to repay the loan. It protects lenders and costs the borrower.

What is GHO?

GHO is Aave's own dollar stablecoin, launched in 2023. It's meant to stay near $1.
