What does FUD mean in trading?
In one line: FUD stands for "fear, uncertainty and doubt." It describes news or talk that makes people worried about an investment, true or not.
What it means
FUD is short for fear, uncertainty and doubt. It's any news, rumor or post that makes people nervous about something they own.
In crypto chats, it's often used to wave off bad news: "That's just FUD."
Where it comes from
The term became well known in the computer industry in the 1970s. It described sales tactics that scared buyers away from a rival's product. Gene Amdahl, who left IBM to start his own company, is often linked to the phrase, used about IBM's tactics. Crypto and trading crowds picked it up much later.
The real lesson
People do spread fear on purpose. Rumors move prices, and some people post scary claims to push a price down so they can buy cheaper. So it's healthy to ask: who is saying this, and do they gain from it?
The trap inside it
The trap runs the other way, too. Calling everything "FUD" is a way to ignore real problems. A hack, a lawsuit, a failed product or a fraud charge isn't FUD. It's news.
Brushing off all bad news is a form of Confirmation bias: only accepting what agrees with what you already believe.
The question isn't "is this scary?" It's "is this true, and does it change my plan?"
A simple example
You hold a coin. A post says "Exchange X is about to collapse!"
Check 3 things before reacting:
- Source. Is it a primary source, like a company statement, a court filing or a regulator? Or an anonymous account?
- Evidence. Does it link to facts, or just repeat a claim?
- Your plan. Does your exit already cover this? If your stop is set, the plan already answers "what if it falls?"
If the source is solid, it may be real risk, not FUD. If it's an anonymous rumor, your plan still decides, not the post. Illustration only.

What does FUD stand for?
Fear, uncertainty and doubt.
What does spreading FUD mean?
It means sharing worrying claims, often without evidence, that make people doubt an investment. Sometimes it's done on purpose to push a price down.

No. FUD is fear without solid evidence. Real, checkable bad news, like a hack or a fraud charge, is information you should take seriously.
