What does HODL mean in crypto?
In one line: HODL is crypto slang for holding a coin through price drops instead of selling. It started as a typo of "hold."
What it means
HODL means hold. Don't sell when price drops. Ride it out.
Many people now say it stands for "hold on for dear life." That meaning was added later.
Where it comes from
This one has a well-known origin. In December 2013, bitcoin's price was falling fast. A user on the Bitcointalk forum posted a rambling message titled "I AM HODLING." The typo stuck. It became a meme, then a motto.
The real lesson
There are 2 very different jobs people mix up:
- Investing: buying something to hold for years, with money you won't need soon. Holding through drops is part of that plan.
- Trading: buying for a move over minutes, days or weeks. Each trade has a stop and a target.
HODL fits the first job. It's a poor fit for the second. A day trade that turns into a "HODL" is a trade that lost its plan.
The trap inside it
The trap is using HODL to avoid a hard choice. Price falls past your stop, and "HODL" sounds braver than "I was wrong."
Crypto can fall a long way. Bitcoin has had several drops of more than 70% from its highs, and many smaller coins never got back to their old prices. Holding works only if you can live with that.
Decide before you buy: is this an investment or a trade? The answer sets your exit.
A simple example
You buy a coin at $100.
- As an investment: you put in a small slice of savings you won't touch for years. You've decided you can sit through a 70% drop. That's a plan.
- As a trade: you set a stop at $92, under the last place price turned around. Price hits $92. The plan says out. Saying "HODL" now turns a trade into an investment you never chose.

Questions
What does HODL stand for?
It began as a typo of "hold" in a 2013 forum post. "Hold on for dear life" was added later as a backronym.
Is HODL a good strategy?
It's a holding style, not a full plan. It suits long-term investing with money you can leave alone. It doesn't suit short-term trades with stops.
Who said HODL first?
A Bitcointalk forum user posted "I AM HODLING" in December 2013 during a bitcoin price drop. The misspelling spread from there.
