What is an inside day in trading?
In one line: An inside day is a daily candle whose high is below the previous day's high and whose low is above the previous day's low.
What it looks like
Look at two daily candles side by side. The second one fits completely inside the first, top to bottom. The second one is the inside day.
The "mother" candle sets the box. The inside day stays in it.
A simple example
| Day | High | Low | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wednesday | $78.60 | $74.20 | $4.40 |
| Thursday | $77.90 | $75.10 | $2.80 |
Thursday's high ($77.90) is below Wednesday's ($78.60). Thursday's low ($75.10) is above Wednesday's ($74.20). So Thursday is an inside day. Its range shrank by more than a third.
The same shape on any timeframe is called an inside bar. Our inside bar guide covers it on all timeframes.
What it can mean
An inside day is a pause. Buyers and sellers both held back. Ranges often shrink before a bigger move, and an inside day is one small sign of that kind of Consolidation.
What it doesn't tell you is direction. The pause can end up or down.
That's why we read it in context:
- Which way does the bigger chart point? A pause inside an uptrend is different from a pause after a long fall.
- Where is it? An inside day sitting right at an old turning point means more than one in the middle of nowhere.
A common mistake
Buying the first poke above the high. Price often pokes past the mother candle's high, then falls back in. That's a Fakeout. We wait for a candle body to close past the level, not just a Wick. More in breakout vs fakeout.
The inside day's range gives you a natural stop. A break above the high with a stop below the inside day's low keeps the risk small and clear.
Questions
Is an inside day bullish or bearish?
Neither on its own. It's a pause. The bigger trend and the level it forms at say more than the candle itself.
What is the difference between an inside day and an inside bar?
Same shape. "Inside day" means the daily chart. "Inside bar" is the general name for any timeframe.
