What is liquidity in trading?

In one line: Liquidity is how easily something can be bought or sold without moving its price much. Chart traders also use it for clusters of orders waiting at obvious levels.

Meaning 1: how easy it is to trade

A liquid market has lots of buyers and sellers at every moment. EUR/USD and big stocks like Apple are very liquid. You can buy or sell in a second, the Spread is small, and your order barely moves the price.

A small, little-known stock might trade only a few thousand shares a day. Try to sell 5,000 shares and you may push the price down just by selling. That's low liquidity. It often comes with wide spreads and more Slippage.

Meaning 2: orders waiting at a level

Chart traders also say "liquidity" for the pile of orders sitting at obvious spots. Here's an example.

A stock has a clear low at $50, tested three times. Many traders who bought have their Stop loss just under $50. Others plan to sell if $50 breaks. That's a cluster of sell orders resting at $49.90 to $49.80.

Price dips to $49.75, fills all those orders, then snaps back to $51 by the close. That quick stab under the low is often called a liquidity sweep. The long lower Wick is the evidence.

Why it matters

The first meaning affects your costs. Trade liquid markets while you learn: tight spreads and clean fills keep things simple.

The second meaning explains a lot of frustrating moves. A wick under a low that hits your stop and reverses isn't always bad luck. Obvious levels attract orders. This is one reason our method waits for a candle body to close past a level before treating it as a real break. More in liquidity sweeps explained.

A common mistake

Putting your stop exactly where everyone else does. One cent under a perfectly obvious low is where stops cluster. Give the stop a little room past the level, and size the trade down so the risk stays the same. The position size calculator keeps that math honest.

Questions

What does it mean when a market is illiquid?

Few buyers and sellers. Prices can jump, spreads are wide, and it can be hard to get out at the price you want.

What is a liquidity grab?

Another name for a liquidity sweep: price briefly pushes past an obvious level, fills the orders resting there, then reverses.
