What is a pre-market routine?

In one line: A pre-market routine is a short, fixed set of steps a trader runs before the trading session starts, to check the news, mark the chart and set the day's limits.

The idea

Pilots run a checklist before every flight. A pre-market routine does the same job before your first trade.

A simple 15-minute routine

Times below are for US stocks, which open at 9:30 am ET. Shift them for your market.

  1. Check the calendar (9:00). Any big report today? US CPI and the jobs report come out at 8:30 am ET. A Fed day has a 2:00 pm ET statement. See how to read an economic calendar.
  2. Check the bigger chart (9:05). Daily chart first. Is it making higher highs and higher lows, the reverse, or neither?
  3. Mark your levels (9:10). The last places price turned around, plus yesterday's high and low. See Previous day high and low.
  4. Set your limits (9:15). Risk per trade (like 1%) and your daily stop, like 2 losses and done. Write them where you can see them.
  5. Check yourself (9:20). Slept badly? Upset? Rushed? If so, trade smaller or sit out.
  6. Pick your watchlist (9:25). 2 to 5 markets with clear levels. Fewer is easier.

A simple example

CPI comes out at 8:30. Your routine at 9:00 shows prices jumped sharply on the news.

Your plan says: on big report days, wait 30 minutes after the open before any trade. So your first possible entry is 10:00, not 9:31. The routine made that call for you before the noise started. See CPI and FOMC days.

Why it matters

Most rule-breaking happens when you're rushed or surprised. A routine moves the big decisions to a calm moment, before money is at risk. Then each trade only needs your pre-trade checklist.

The free StructureX chart tool on TradingView marks the last turning points for you, which makes step 3 quicker. It works in the TradingView phone app too.

A common mistake

Skipping the routine on "obvious" days. The days that feel obvious are often the ones with a surprise report or a big gap. Run it every day, even when it takes 5 minutes. More in trading routine and daily loss limit.

Questions

What should a pre-market routine include?

The day's economic reports, the trend on the bigger chart, your key levels, your risk and daily limits, a quick check of how you feel, and a short watchlist.

How long should a pre-market routine take?

10 to 20 minutes is enough for most traders. Consistency matters more than length.

Do I need a routine for forex or crypto?

Yes. They trade around the clock, so set your routine to the start of the session you trade, like London or New York.
