How to practice trading without risking money: 3 free ways

You wouldn't drive on the highway before a few laps in an empty parking lot. Trading works the same way, and the parking lot is free.

1. Replay past charts

TradingView has a Replay button. It hides the future and plays the chart forward one candle at a time. You get months of practice in a few evenings — on charts that already happened. Step by step: how to use TradingView bar replay.

You decide at the edge. The future stays hidden until you click.
You decide at the edge. The future stays hidden until you click.

The one rule: never peek. Decide before you click to the next candle. If you've already seen what happens, it isn't practice — it's hindsight.

2. Paper trade

A paper trading (or demo) account uses pretend money with real, live prices. Most brokers offer one for free, and TradingView has one built in. It's the step between past charts and real money: same rules, real time, no risk.

3. Write every trade down

Practice only counts if you can look back at it. For every practice trade, write:

After 20 trades, read your notes. Which setups worked? Which mistakes repeat? Numbers beat memory. Full walk-through: how to keep a trading journal.

A simple practice path

  1. Learn the basics — reading a chart, marking levels, sizing a trade.
  2. Practice on past charts — a set number of replay trades, all written down.
  3. Paper trade — the same rules, live, for a few weeks.
  4. Only then go small — real money, tiny size, same rules.

That's exactly the path our course follows — 100 practice trades before real money, with a trade tracker that keeps the numbers for you.

Questions

How long should I practice before using real money?

Long enough to have a written record — many traders aim for 50 to 100 practice trades with the same rules. If you can't show your rules worked on paper, real money won't fix that.

Is paper trading the same as real trading?

The charts are the same; the feelings aren't. Real money makes it harder to follow your rules. That's why the last step is real money at a tiny size, not a jump to full size.

Is practice trading free?

Yes. TradingView's replay and paper trading are available on the free plan (replay limits vary by plan), and most brokers offer free demo accounts.
