Avalanche trading explained: what moves AVAX, and when
Avalanche lets projects build their own custom blockchains on top of it. That's its big idea, and news about who builds there is a big part of what moves AVAX.
At a glance

|---|---|
| What it is | A proof-of-stake blockchain whose main network went live in 2020; AVAX pays fees and is staked |
| Price step | Set by each exchange, often $0.01 |
| What a move is worth | Depends on size: 10 AVAX × a $2 move = $20 |

| What moves it most | Bitcoin and Ethereum, new chains and apps on Avalanche, crypto mood |

What it is, briefly
Avalanche was built by a company called Ava Labs, and its main network launched in September 2020. It runs on proof of stake: holders lock up AVAX to help secure it.
Its main chain works with the same kind of apps as Ethereum, so developers can move apps over with few changes. Its standout feature: projects can launch their own custom chains linked to Avalanche, with their own rules. AVAX supply is capped at 720 million.
What moves it
- Bitcoin and Ethereum. The wider market sets the backdrop.
- Who builds there. Games, finance firms and apps launching their own chains on Avalanche make news.
- Network activity. More use means more fees paid in AVAX.
- Token unlocks. Scheduled releases of coins to early backers and the team have drawn attention in the past.
- Rates and mood. FOMC 2:00 pm ET, CPI 8:30 am ET.
When it's busiest
The Europe-US overlap, roughly 8:00 am to noon ET, is usually busiest. Weekends are thinner, and tails get longer.
Its personality
- Bigger swings than bitcoin. As a smaller coin, AVAX often moves more in percent.
- Competes in a crowded field. Many blockchains chase the same developers, so it reacts to rivals' news too.
- Strong trends, sharp pullbacks.
- News-sensitive to big launch announcements.
Reading it with our method
Use more than one chart. Check the weekly and daily first, then your entry chart. See multiple timeframe analysis. Mark the last places price turned around on each, and trade in the direction the bigger chart shows.
Only a candle body closing past a level counts.
Size from the stop. Example: risk $20, stop $2 away. $20 ÷ $2 = 10 AVAX. Use the position size calculator. A math example, not a promise.
With leverage, check the force-close price in the crypto liquidation calculator, and keep your stop well inside it.
Common mistakes
- Treating every launch headline as a reason to buy. Many fade fast.
- Bitcoin-sized stops. AVAX often needs more room in percent.
- Missing scheduled unlocks. Check the project's own published schedule.
- Full size on thin weekends.
