GBP/CAD explained: the pound, oil and the Bank of Canada
GBP/CAD mixes two very different stories: UK politics and rates on one side, oil and Canada's economy on the other. Each one can take the wheel.
At a glance
| GBP/CAD | |
|---|---|
| What it is | How many Canadian dollars one British pound buys |
| Pip size | 0.0001 |
| One pip is worth | C$10 per standard lot. In US dollars it depends on USD/CAD |
| Busiest hours (ET) | About 3 am – noon, strongest 8 am – noon |

| Trading hours | Sunday ~5 pm ET to Friday 5 pm ET |
Pip math, as an example. C$10 per standard lot is about $7.14 if USD/CAD were at 1.40. A math example, not a forecast. The pip value calculator gives today's figure.
What moves it
- The Bank of England. 8 decisions a year, usually at 7 am ET.
- The Bank of Canada. 8 decisions a year at 9:45 am ET.
- UK data. CPI around 2 am ET, jobs and wages in the UK morning.
- Canadian data. Jobs and CPI at 8:30 am ET.
- Oil. Higher oil tends to lift the loonie, which pushes GBP/CAD down. Lower oil tends to do the opposite.
- UK politics, which tends to move the pound more than the euro.
When it's busiest
UK news lands early, about 2 to 7 am ET. Canadian news and oil action fill the US morning. The overlap from 8 am to noon ET is usually the busiest and has the tightest spreads. After London closes around noon ET, the pair often slows. Asian hours are thin.
Canada and the US change clocks together; the UK changes on European dates. In late March and late October, the BoE's 7 am ET slot moves by an hour.
Its personality
- Lively. The pound's jumpiness plus oil's swings usually give it wider ranges than EUR/CAD.
- Two-driver days. On some mornings UK news pushes it up while oil pushes it down. That can mean chop.
- Trends that last when both banks are heading in different directions.
Name the driver. Ask: is it the pound or the loonie moving? A glance at GBP/USD and USD/CAD answers it in seconds.
Reading it with our method
- Daily chart first. Mark the last places price turned around. Higher highs and higher lows, or the reverse?
- Find the driver with the check above.
- Body close only. 7 am, 8:30 am and 9:45 am ET news can each leave tails.
- Stop from the chart, size from the math. See how to set a stop loss, then use the lot size calculator for about 1% risk.
Common mistakes
- Oil backwards. Higher oil usually means a lower GBP/CAD.
- Treating it like EUR/CAD. The pound makes it swing wider; stops need more room and sizes less.
- Trading the evening ET. Neither London nor Toronto is open.
- Overlapping bets, like long GBP/CAD and long GBP/USD: mostly one bet on the pound.
