USD/PLN explained: what moves the Polish zloty against the dollar
Poland uses the zloty, not the euro, but most of its trade is with euro countries. So USD/PLN is really two moves stacked together, and seeing that makes the chart much easier to read.

The hidden math
Most zloty trading happens against the euro, in EUR/PLN. USD/PLN is built from two prices:
- USD/PLN = EUR/PLN ÷ EUR/USD
So if EUR/USD falls and EUR/PLN stays flat, USD/PLN still rises. On many days the dollar side does most of the work.
What moves it
The National Bank of Poland (NBP). Its Monetary Policy Council holds about 11 decision meetings a year, roughly once a month except August. Its inflation target is 2.5%, with a band of one point either side.
The euro story. Because Poland trades mostly with Europe, the zloty tends to move with the euro. ECB decisions, usually at 8:15 am ET, matter here too.
The Fed and US data. US CPI and jobs data at 8:30 am ET can move USD/PLN as much as EUR/USD.
Polish data. Monthly inflation, wages and factory surveys come out in the European morning.
Risk mood. The zloty is a central European currency. In a global scare, money tends to leave it for bigger currencies. News from the region, such as the war in Ukraine next door, can also weigh on it.
When it's busiest
Warsaw is usually 6 hours ahead of New York (5 for a few weeks when clocks change on different dates).
- About 2–3 am ET: Warsaw opens.
- 3 am – noon ET: most of the volume.
- Evening ET: thin, with wide spreads.
Its personality
- Moves like EUR/USD in reverse, plus a bit. When the dollar strengthens, USD/PLN usually rises.
- Bigger swings than EUR/USD. The zloty adds its own moves on top.
- Sharper on fear. Risk-off days often hit it harder than the euro.
- Wider spreads. Fine in European hours, wider outside them.
Reading it with our method
- Start with EUR/USD's daily chart. Since it drives so much of USD/PLN, know its direction first.
- Then USD/PLN's daily chart. Mark the last places price turned around. Higher highs and higher lows, or lower ones? If both charts agree, the read is cleaner.
- Body-close rule. Only a candle body closing past a level counts.
- Stop first, size second. The lot size calculator turns your stop in pips into a size with the same risk every time.
Pick one view of the dollar. Short EUR/USD and long USD/PLN together is mostly the same bet. Count it as one risk, not two.
Common mistakes
- Watching only Poland. The dollar and the euro often matter more than Polish news.
- Trading at night. The spread can be wide outside European hours.
- Doubling the same idea. See the tip above.
- Sizing from leverage. 20:1 is a ceiling. Your stop sets your size.

Is USD/PLN an exotic pair?
