USD/SEK explained: what moves the Swedish krona against the dollar
Sweden sells cars, machines and steel to the world. So its currency often acts like a weather vane for global growth.

What moves it
The Riksbank. Sweden's central bank normally holds 8 monetary policy meetings a year. The decision is published at 9:30 am Stockholm time the day after the meeting. That's usually 3:30 am ET.
The Fed. USD/SEK is half a dollar pair. US CPI and jobs data at 8:30 am ET, and the FOMC at 2:00 pm ET, often move it more than Swedish news.
Global growth. Sweden exports a lot. When the world economy looks stronger, the krona tends to firm up. When growth fears rise, it tends to weaken.
Risk mood. The krona is small and less traded than the big currencies. In a scare, money often leaves it. That's a Risk-on and risk-off effect.
The euro. Most of Sweden's trade is with Europe. So USD/SEK often moves a lot like EUR/USD, in reverse. When EUR/USD rises, USD/SEK often falls.
When it's busiest
Stockholm is usually 6 hours ahead of New York. For a few weeks in March and late October / early November, when clocks change on different dates, it's 5.
- About 2–3 am ET: Stockholm opens. Swedish data comes out early.
- 3:30 am ET: Riksbank decision days.
- 8 am – noon ET: London–New York overlap.
- Asian session: thin and often wide.
Its personality
- Swingier than majors. USD/SEK often moves more in percentage terms than EUR/USD.
- Mirror of EUR/USD. On many days, the dollar side does most of the work.
- Gaps in liquidity. Spreads widen in the Asian session and on news.
- Themes, not headlines. Long trends usually follow a change in growth or rate outlook.
Reading it with our method
- Daily chart first. Mark the last places price turned around. Is it making higher highs and higher lows, or lower ones?
- Check EUR/USD's bigger picture. If EUR/USD is falling and USD/SEK is rising, they agree. Mixed signals are a reason to wait.
- Body-close rule. Only a candle body closing past a level counts.
- Stop first, size second. Stops here tend to be wider in pips. The lot size calculator turns your stop into a size so the risk stays the same.

Common mistakes
- Watching only Sweden. US data usually matters more for this pair.
- Missing the early Riksbank time. 3:30 am ET is easy to sleep through. Know if a decision is due before you hold overnight.
- Assuming tight spreads all day. Outside European and US hours, the cost of trading rises.
- Sizing like EUR/USD. Recalculate every trade with your real stop.
Questions
What moves the Swedish krona?
The Riksbank, global growth, risk mood and the euro. On many days, US news and the broad dollar matter just as much.
When does the Riksbank announce its rate?
It normally holds 8 meetings a year. The decision is published at 9:30 am Stockholm time the next day, usually 3:30 am ET.
Why does USD/SEK move opposite to EUR/USD?
Sweden trades mostly with Europe, so the krona often moves with the euro. When the dollar strengthens against both, EUR/USD falls and USD/SEK rises.
How much leverage can I use on USD/SEK in the US?
Up to 50:1, because US rules count the krona as a major currency. Your stop and size decide your real risk.
