EUR/SEK explained: the euro against the Swedish krona
EUR/SEK takes the US dollar out of the picture. What's left is a straight contest between Europe's big central bank and Sweden's small one.

This is one of the Cross pairs: two currencies with no US dollar in them. Your account is likely in dollars, so the pip value goes through a conversion. Use our pip value calculator.
Both the euro and the krona count as major currencies under US rules, so leverage can go up to 50:1. Fewer US brokers list it than EUR/USD. Check yours.
What moves it
The ECB. The European Central Bank meets 8 times a year. Its decision lands at 2:15 pm Frankfurt time, usually 8:15 am ET. The press conference follows 30 minutes later.
The Riksbank. Sweden's central bank normally meets 8 times a year too. Its decision is published at 9:30 am Stockholm time, usually 3:30 am ET.
The rate gap. When markets expect Swedish rates to rise faster than euro rates, the krona tends to gain and EUR/SEK falls. The reverse lifts it.
Swedish data. Sweden's monthly inflation figures and its jobs and growth numbers come out in the early European morning. Surprises can move the cross sharply.
Risk mood. The krona is smaller and less traded than the euro. In a global scare, money often moves out of the krona into the euro. EUR/SEK then rises.
When it's busiest
Frankfurt and Stockholm share a clock, usually 6 hours ahead of New York. For a few weeks in spring and fall, when clocks change on different dates, it's 5.
- About 2–3 am ET: Europe opens. Swedish data comes out early.
- 3 am – 11 am ET: the main action.
- Afternoon and night ET: quiet. Spreads widen.
Its personality
- Slower than USD/SEK. The euro and krona often move together, so the cross swings less than either does against the dollar.
- Ranges for long spells. It can sit inside a band for weeks, then trend when rate views change.
- Risk days push it up. Fear tends to lift EUR/SEK as money leaves the krona.
- US news matters less. But a big US shock still moves risk mood.
Reading it with our method
- Daily chart first. Mark the last places price turned around. On a cross that ranges a lot, the edges of the range are your levels.
- Range or trend? Higher highs and higher lows mean trend. Repeated turns at the same levels mean range. Our range trading guide shows how to read the edges.
- Body-close rule. A level only breaks when a candle body closes past it.
- Stop first, size second. The lot size calculator handles the conversion and turns your stop into a size.
Common mistakes
- Trading it at US-afternoon hours. Little volume, wider spreads, small moves.
- Forgetting the conversion. A pip here isn't $10. It depends on the krona and the dollar.
- Reading US news into it. EUR/SEK is mostly about Europe and Sweden. Check the European calendar.
- Missing the 3:30 am ET Riksbank release. Know the dates before holding overnight.
Questions
What is EUR/SEK?
It's the price of one euro in Swedish kronor. It's a cross pair, so the US dollar isn't part of it.
Why does EUR/SEK rise when markets are nervous?
The krona is a small currency. In a scare, money tends to move into larger, more traded currencies like the euro.
What time do Swedish and euro rate decisions come out?
The Riksbank publishes at 9:30 am Stockholm time, usually 3:30 am ET. The ECB announces at 2:15 pm Frankfurt time, usually 8:15 am ET.
Is EUR/SEK good for beginners?
It can be calm for long periods, but spreads are wider than EUR/USD. Many beginners learn on EUR/USD first and add crosses later.
