Lose 50%, need 100% to get back. See any number.
This one table changes how people think about risk — for good. Type any drop and see the climb back to even. The deeper the hole, the steeper the climb.
Why a loss is harder to undo than it looks
Lose 50% and you have half your money left. To get back to where you started, that half has to double — a 100% gain. The deeper the hole, the steeper the climb out.
| If the account drops | It needs to gain |
|---|---|
| 5% | 5.3% |
| 10% | 11.1% |
| 20% | 25% |
| 25% | 33.3% |
| 30% | 42.9% |
| 40% | 66.7% |
| 50% | 100% |
| 60% | 150% |
| 75% | 300% |
| 90% | 900% |
The lesson: protecting the account matters more than any single win. Small, fixed risk per trade (many traders use 1%) and a daily stop keep drops shallow — and shallow drops are easy to climb out of. See Why traders use a daily loss limit.
Make this a habit, not a one-off. Lesson 2 of our free email course is all about risk: the 1% rule, where the stop goes, and the 2-loss rule. Send me the free lessons →
