What does breakeven mean in trading?
In one line: Breakeven is the point where you neither make nor lose money, after costs. It can mean a price, a stop, or the win rate a strategy needs.
Three ways traders use it
- Breakeven price: where you'd get out with no gain and no loss.
- Moving the stop to breakeven: sliding your Stop loss to your entry once price has moved your way.
- Breakeven win rate: how often you need to be right for a strategy to come out even.
A simple example: the price
You buy 100 shares at $40.00. Commission is $1 to get in and $1 to get out. Your breakeven price is $40.02, not $40.00. The extra 2 cents a share covers the $2 in costs.
In forex, the Spread works the same way. Buy with a 1-pip spread and price has to rise 1 pip just to get back to even.
A simple example: the win rate
The formula is: breakeven win rate = 1 ÷ (1 + reward-to-risk).
| Reward : risk | Breakeven win rate |
|---|---|
| 1 : 1 | 50% |
| 2 : 1 | 33.3% |
| 3 : 1 | 25% |
At 2 : 1, you come out even if you win 1 trade in 3, before costs. Anything above that is positive Expectancy in the math. A math example, not a promise.
The expectancy calculator runs these numbers for your own results.
Why it matters
Breakeven tells you what your plan needs to work. It turns "I hope I'm right" into a number you can test on past charts. It's the bridge between Win rate and the Risk-reward ratio.
A common mistake
Moving the stop to breakeven too early. It feels safe. But normal price wiggles often tag your entry before the move happens, and a winner turns into a scratch.
Write a rule for when you'll move it, like "after price closes past the last turning point", and test that rule in replay. See how to set a stop loss.
Questions
What is a breakeven stop?
A stop moved to your entry price, so the trade can't turn into a loss. Costs and gaps can still make it a small loss.
What win rate do I need to break even at 2:1?
About 33.3% before costs. Fees and spreads push it a little higher.
Is breaking even a bad result?
Not for a beginner. Breaking even while following your rules shows the process works. Then you can improve it.
