What is confluence in trading?

In one line: Confluence is when several separate reasons to take a trade line up at the same price and time, making that spot worth more attention.

A simple example

Price is in an uptrend on the daily chart. It pulls back to 1.0850. At that price you notice:

  1. 1.0850 was Resistance last month. Old ceilings often become new floors.
  2. The daily chart's trend still points up.
  3. The Pullback has reached the 50% level of the last up move.

Three reasons, one price. That's confluence. It doesn't promise price turns there. It just makes 1.0850 a spot worth watching closely.

Why it matters

One reason on its own is weak. Lines are everywhere on a chart, and price touches some of them by chance.

When separate tools point to the same place, the level is easier to trust and easier to plan around. You also get a natural place for your Stop loss: just past the zone where all the reasons stop being true.

It also helps you skip trades. If a setup has only one weak reason, waiting is a fine choice. A pre-trade checklist makes this a habit.

A common mistake

Counting the same reason three times. RSI, the stochastic and MACD are all built from recent price moves. If all three say "oversold," that's closer to one reason than three.

Real confluence comes from different kinds of evidence:

Write each reason in a short line. If two lines say the same thing in different words, count it once.

Questions

How many confluences do I need for a trade?

There's no magic number. Many traders want 2–3 separate reasons. More isn't always better, because waiting for 6 can mean never trading at all.

Does confluence make a trade a sure thing?

No. Trades with strong confluence still lose. It raises the quality of the spot, not the certainty, so the stop and position size still come first.

What are common confluence factors?

Support and resistance, the bigger trend, Fibonacci levels, moving averages, round numbers and supply and demand zones.
