What is herd mentality in trading?

In one line: Herd mentality is following what the crowd is doing, buying because others are buying or selling because others are selling, instead of following your own plan.

The idea

When everyone is running one way, it feels safest to run with them. That instinct kept people alive for thousands of years.

In markets, it often means arriving late.

A simple example

A stock has risen 40% in a week. It's all over social media. Friends are talking about it.

You buy near the top of the move because "everyone is in." Your stop? You didn't set one. The chart's last turning point is 25% below the price you paid.

Two days later, early buyers start selling. Price drops 15%. The crowd that pushed it up is now pushing it down.

You didn't buy a setup. You bought a crowd.

Why it matters

Herd moves can be fast and big in both directions:

A common mistake

Treating popularity as confirmation. "So many people are buying, it must be right." Lots of buyers tells you a move is popular. It doesn't tell you where your stop goes or if the risk makes sense. See FOMO trading.

Run the same pre-trade checklist on a hot stock that you run on a boring one. If it fails the checklist, the crowd doesn't change that.

Questions

What is an example of herd mentality in the stock market?

Buying a stock only because it's trending on social media, after a big run, with no plan for where you'd get out.

Is following the trend the same as herd mentality?

No. Trading with a Trend using your own rules, with a stop set from the chart, is a plan. Herd mentality is buying because others are, with no plan at all.

How do I stop following the crowd?

Write your rules down and check every trade against them. If a trade only makes sense because other people are in it, skip it.
