Chevron stock (CVX): what moves it, explained simply
Chevron is the only oil company left in the Dow. Its chart is a daily tug-of-war between the price of crude and its own big bets.
This page explains how the stock tends to move. It isn't a recommendation to buy or sell it.

What the company does
Chevron finds and pumps oil and gas (upstream). It also refines crude into fuels and sells them (downstream). It's based in Houston now; it moved its headquarters there from California, announced in 2024.
Its biggest recent change: in July 2025 it completed its purchase of Hess. The prize was Hess's share of the large oil project off Guyana. Exxon had argued it had first rights to that share. An arbitration panel ruled in Chevron's favor, and the deal closed.
What moves it
- Oil prices. The biggest single driver. Watch crude oil futures for the mood.
- Output growth. Investors watch whether Guyana and the Permian Basin keep adding barrels.
- Cost cuts. After the Hess deal, Chevron announced job cuts and savings targets. Progress shows up in reports.
- OPEC+ and world events. Output decisions by big oil countries, sanctions and conflicts move oil, then CVX.
- Earnings. Often on a Friday morning, frequently the same day as Exxon. See Earnings report.
- Dividend and buybacks. Chevron pays a quarterly Dividend and buys back shares; changes to either get attention.
When it's busiest
- Before 9:30 am ET: oil trades overnight, so CVX's opening move is often half-decided already.
- 9:30–10:30 am ET: the open.
- Wednesday 10:30 am ET: the weekly US oil inventory report can move crude.
- Earnings mornings: results come before the open.
US stock hours stay 9:30 am–4:00 pm ET all year. Extended-hours times depend on your broker.
Its personality
- Oil's shadow. On many days CVX moves like a slower version of crude.
- A Dow mover. The Dow is price-weighted, and CVX is the only oil stock in it. Big oil days show up in the Dow through Chevron.
- Pairs with Exxon. The two often move together. When they split, it's usually company news.
- Long waves. Energy stocks have tended to trend for long stretches with oil.
Reading it with our method
Use two charts. First, the weekly chart of CVX: mark the last places price turned around and note the direction. Then the daily chart of crude. If both point the same way, the read is cleaner. This is the same "bigger chart first" idea from multiple timeframe analysis.
On your entry chart, only a candle body closing past a level counts. A tail on an OPEC+ headline doesn't.
Set the stop from the chart, then size from the stop. Example: your stop is $3.50 below your entry and your plan risks $70. That's $70 ÷ $3.50 = 20 shares. Use the position size calculator. A math example, not a promise. Any trade can lose.

Common mistakes
- Trading CVX without checking crude. Oil's overnight move often sets the open.
- Assuming Chevron and Exxon are the same trade. Different projects, different costs, different news.
- Chasing a sector spike. Oil can reverse fast after a headline. Wait for a body close.
- Holding big size into OPEC+ meetings. A surprise can gap the whole group. See news trading explained.
