GBP/AUD explained: big ranges between London and Sydney
London and Sydney are about as far apart as two trading cities get. GBP/AUD carries the news of both, which is why its daily swings are often large.
At a glance
| GBP/AUD | |
|---|---|
| What it is | How many Australian dollars one British pound buys |
| Pip size | 0.0001 |
| One pip is worth | A$10 per standard lot. In US dollars it depends on AUD/USD |
| Busiest hours (ET) | London, about 3 am – noon; Australian news in the US evening |
| What moves it most | The Bank of England, the RBA, China, risk mood, UK news |
| Trading hours | Sunday ~5 pm ET to Friday 5 pm ET |
Pip math, as an example. A$10 per standard lot is $6.50 if AUD/USD were at 0.65. A math example, not a forecast. The pip value calculator works it out at today's rate.
What moves it
- The Bank of England. 8 decisions a year, usually at 7 am ET. UK CPI around 2 am ET.
- The RBA. 8 meetings a year, 2:30 pm Sydney time (about 10:30 pm–12:30 am ET).
- China and metals, through the Aussie. Strong Chinese demand tends to lift the Aussie and push GBP/AUD down.
- Risk mood. In a scare, the Aussie often falls faster than the pound, so GBP/AUD can rise.
- UK politics and budgets, through the pound.
When it's busiest
The pair has two rush hours for US traders. Australian and Chinese data land in the evening ET, roughly 7 pm to midnight. UK data and the London open, around 2 to 7 am ET, bring the other half. Many moves start before New York wakes up.
The UK springs forward in March, Australia falls back around April, and the US moves on its own dates. In ET, the gap between UK and Australian releases changes through the year. Our market hours tool keeps it straight.
Its personality
- Wide daily ranges. Often one of the biggest-moving crosses that doesn't include the yen.
- Big trends, big pullbacks. Even clean trends can swing back hard before carrying on.
- Wider spreads than the dollar pairs, more so in quiet hours.
Wide pair, same risk. If the chart needs a stop twice as far as on EUR/USD, the size is half as big. The money at risk stays around 1%. Our guide on how much to risk per trade shows the math.
Reading it with our method
- Daily chart first. On a pair this wide, the daily turning points are your map. Mark them.
- Only trade in the daily direction. Counter-trend trades get swept up in the big swings.
- Body close only. Overnight news leaves long tails.
- Size from the stop with the lot size calculator. Give the stop real room, then shrink the size.
Common mistakes
- Normal lot size on a wide pair. The stop is further away, so the size must be smaller.
- Holding through the RBA or UK CPI without seeing them on the calendar.
- Chasing a big London-open candle. It often swings back.
- Forgetting it's a pound trade and an Aussie trade. Watch both sides.
Questions
Why does GBP/AUD move so much?
It pairs two currencies that react strongly to their own news, the pound to UK events and the Aussie to China and risk mood. Their moves often add together.
How much is a pip on GBP/AUD?
A$10 per standard lot. In US dollars that's 10 times the AUD/USD price, so usually under $10.
When is GBP/AUD most active?
In London hours, about 3 am to noon ET, and when Australian news lands in the US evening.
Does GBP/AUD rise when markets fall?
Often, because the Aussie tends to fall faster than the pound in a scare. It's a tendency, not a rule.
