JPMorgan stock (JPM): what moves the biggest US bank
JPMorgan usually reports before most big companies each quarter. So its numbers are often the first real look at how US borrowers and businesses are doing.
This page explains how the stock tends to move. It isn't a recommendation to buy or sell it.

What the company does
A bank earns money in two main ways. It lends money at a higher rate than it pays savers. And it charges fees: for cards, for advice on big company deals, and for trading.
JPMorgan does all of that at huge scale. Chase is its everyday bank for people. The investment bank works with big companies and governments.
What moves it
- Interest rates. The gap between what JPM earns on loans and pays on deposits is called net interest income. Fed decisions and Bond yields change it. See how interest rates affect stocks.
- The shape of rates. Banks tend to like it when long-term rates sit well above short-term ones. See Yield curve.
- Loan losses. How much the bank sets aside for loans that may not be paid back. A jump hints that the bank sees tougher times ahead.
- Trading and deal fees. Busy markets and lots of company deals help these. Quiet markets don't.
- Fed stress tests. The Fed tests big banks each year, with results usually in late June. They affect how much banks can pay out.
- Bank scares. Trouble at other banks can hit the whole group, as in March 2023.
When it's busiest
- Earnings morning: results come out before 9:30 am ET, so the reaction shows in pre-market and at the open.
- Fed days: the statement comes out at 2:00 pm ET and the press conference starts at 2:30 pm. See CPI and FOMC days.
- 8:30 am ET data days: inflation and jobs data move rates, and rates move banks.
- 9:30–10:30 am and 3:00–4:00 pm ET: the usual open and close rush.
US stock hours stay 9:30 am–4:00 pm ET all year.
Its personality
- Rate-driven. JPM often moves with bond yields more than with tech news.
- Kicks off earnings season. Big banks report first, so JPM's report can move the whole financial group that morning.
- Calm, then sharp. It can trend slowly for months, then fall fast on a scare.
- A dividend payer. It pays a quarterly Dividend, so it's held by many long-term investors.
Reading it with our method
Start on the daily chart. Mark the last places price turned around. Then glance at the 10-year yield. If yields and JPM are moving together, you know what's driving it.
On your entry chart, only a candle body closing past a level counts. On earnings mornings, let the first candles close before reading anything.
Stop first, size second. Example: your stop is $4 away and your plan risks $80. That's $80 ÷ $4 = 20 shares. Use the position size calculator. A math example, not a promise. Losses are always possible.
Common mistakes
- Trading it like a tech stock. Rates move it more than product news. Check the calendar.
- Missing that it reports before the open. The big move can happen while you're still asleep.
- Reading only profit. Watch the loan-loss number and the guidance on interest income.
- Ignoring the group. If all banks are falling on a scare, one strong report rarely holds it up.
Questions
When does JPMorgan report earnings?
Four times a year, before the US market opens, usually in mid-January, April, July and October. It's often among the first big companies to report. Check JPMorgan's investor site for exact dates.
Is JPMorgan in the Dow Jones?
Yes. JPMorgan Chase is one of the 30 stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. It's also in the S&P 500.
How do interest rates affect bank stocks?
Banks earn the gap between loan rates and deposit rates. Rate changes can widen or squeeze that gap. Higher rates can also make loans harder to repay, so the effect isn't always simple.
Does JPMorgan pay a dividend?
Yes, JPMorgan pays a quarterly dividend. The amount can change, often after the Fed's yearly stress test.
