USD/MXN explained: what moves the Mexican peso against the dollar
USD/MXN can drift quietly for weeks, then jump in a day. Once you know what wakes it up, those jumps stop looking random.
At a glance
| Item | USD/MXN |
|---|---|
| What it is | How many Mexican pesos one US dollar buys |
| Pip size | 0.0001 on most platforms (check your broker) |
| One pip is worth | 10 pesos per standard lot of 100,000 dollars, turned into dollars at the current rate |
| Busiest hours (ET) | About 8 am – 2 pm, during the New York day |
| What moves it most | Banxico and the Fed, US–Mexico trade news, global risk mood |
| Trading hours | Sunday ~5 pm ET to Friday 5 pm ET |
The peso is the quote currency here. So the Pip value in dollars changes as the rate moves. Our pip value calculator does that math for you.
US retail leverage on the peso is capped at 20:1, not the 50:1 allowed on major pairs. Some brokers set it lower still.
What moves it
Two central banks. Banxico (the Bank of Mexico) sets Mexico's rate at about 8 meetings a year. Decisions come out at 1 pm Mexico City time. Mexico no longer uses daylight saving, so that's 3 pm ET in summer and 2 pm ET in winter. The Fed sits on the other side.
The rate gap. Mexico's rates have been well above US rates for years. That makes the peso popular for the Carry trade (borrow a low-rate currency, hold a higher-rate one). Carry trades build slowly and unwind fast.
Trade with the US. Most of Mexico's exports go to the US. Tariff headlines and talks about the USMCA trade deal can move the peso within minutes.
Global risk mood. When markets get nervous, money tends to leave emerging-market currencies first. USD/MXN often rises when US stocks fall hard.
US data. The US jobs report and CPI, both at 8:30 am ET, move this pair a lot. Mexican inflation reports matter too.
When it's busiest
Most peso trading happens while New York and Mexico City are open, roughly 8 am to 2 pm ET. The Asian session is thin. Spreads often widen there, and around the 5 pm ET daily rollover.
One catch on time zones: since Mexico dropped daylight saving in 2022, the gap between Mexico City and New York is 2 hours in summer and 1 hour in winter. Our market hours tool helps.
Its personality
- Stairs up, elevator down for the peso. The peso often gains slowly for long stretches. When fear hits, USD/MXN can jump in a few sessions. After Mexico's June 2024 election, the peso fell sharply within days.
- Wider spreads than majors. Usually tight in New York hours, wider at night and on news.
- Big round numbers matter. Whole-peso levels get a lot of attention.
- Swap costs are real. Holding a position overnight earns or costs interest, called the Swap (rollover). On this pair it can be large and it's one-sided.
Reading it with our method
- Start on the daily chart. Mark the last places price turned around. Is it making higher highs and higher lows, or lower ones?
- Trade only in that direction on a smaller chart. Fighting a fast peso move is how small risks get big.
- Body closes only. Spikes on trade headlines leave long tails. A level counts as broken only when a candle body closes past it.
- Stop first, size second. Your stop sits past the last turning point. Then the lot size calculator turns that stop into a size. Peso stops are often wider than EUR/USD stops, so your size usually ends up smaller.
Example: risk 1% of a 10,000-unit account = 100 units. If your stop is wide, your size shrinks to keep the risk at 100. A math example, not a promise.
Common mistakes
- Using EUR/USD sizes. The pip value and the typical stop are different. Recalculate every time.
- Holding through the weekend on a headline. Trade news often lands on weekends. Price can open Sunday far from Friday's close, past your stop.
- Ignoring the swap. Holding for weeks can quietly cost more than the spread.
- Forgetting the risk link. A falling US stock market often lifts USD/MXN. Check the S&P 500 before calling a peso move "random".
Questions
Why is the Mexican peso so traded?
It's easy to trade around the clock, Mexico's economy is closely tied to the US, and its higher interest rates draw carry traders. That makes it a popular way to trade emerging-market mood.
What time does Banxico announce rates?
At 1 pm Mexico City time. That's 3 pm ET while the US is on daylight saving, and 2 pm ET in winter. Check Banxico's calendar for dates.
Does USD/MXN go up when stocks fall?
Often, yes. In fearful markets, money tends to leave higher-risk currencies like the peso. It isn't a fixed rule, so treat it as a tendency.
Can I trade USD/MXN with a US broker?
Many US forex brokers list it, at up to 20:1 leverage. Check your broker's list, spreads and swap rates first.
