Trading glossary · Updated 2026-10-21

What it means

The saying is simple: go with the flow. If price keeps rising, look to buy. If it keeps falling, don't fight it.

Swimming with a current is easier than swimming against it.

Where it comes from

It's one of the most repeated sayings on Wall Street. Its exact origin is unclear. Many people add a second line: "...until the end, when it bends."

The real lesson

A Trend is a direction you can see on a chart:

Trading with that direction means the bigger flow of orders is behind you. Our higher highs and higher lows guide shows how to mark it.

Check the bigger chart first. A 5-minute uptrend inside a daily downtrend is a weak friend. See multiple timeframe analysis.

The trap inside it

The trap is the missing half: trends end. Following a trend you're no longer looking at is just habit.

Signs a trend may be bending:

The other trap is joining too late. A trend that has run far, fast, often has a Pullback ahead. Buying the top of a big push means a far-away stop.

Trends are friends. But even friends move away. Check the chart, not your memory.

A simple example

A stock climbs: $20 → $24, dips to $22, climbs to $27, dips to $25, climbs to $30. That's an uptrend: higher highs, higher lows.

Following it might mean buying near $25 on the next dip, with a stop under $25. Later, price falls to $24.50 and closes there, below the last low. The friend has changed its mind. The plan says step aside. Illustration only.

Questions

What is the full quote "the trend is your friend"?

A common version is "The trend is your friend until the end, when it bends." The second part is a later addition. Who said either first is unclear.

Is "the trend is your friend" true?

It's a sensible default, not a law. Trading with the direction of the bigger chart lines you up with most of the buying or selling. Trends still reverse.

How do you know which way the trend is?

Mark the last places price turned around. Higher highs and higher lows mean up. Lower highs and lower lows mean down. Neither means no clear trend.
