EUR/JPY explained: the euro-yen cross and risk mood
EUR/JPY has no dollar in it, but it's built from two dollar pairs. Once you see that, its bigger swings stop being a mystery.
At a glance
| EUR/JPY | |
|---|---|
| What it is | How many Japanese yen one euro buys |
| Pip size | 0.01 |
| One pip is worth | ¥1,000 per standard lot. In US dollars it depends on USD/JPY |
| Busiest hours (ET) | Tokyo into London, about 7 pm – 4 am, then 3 am – noon |
| What moves it most | The ECB vs the Bank of Japan, risk mood, European data |
| Trading hours | Sunday ~5 pm ET to Friday 5 pm ET |
Pip math, as an example. One pip is ¥1,000 per standard lot. If USD/JPY were at 150, that's about $6.67. A math example, not a forecast. The pip value calculator converts at today's price.
A "cross" in plain words
A cross is a pair without the US dollar. Its price is roughly EUR/USD multiplied by USD/JPY. So EUR/JPY moves when either of those moves. If both push the same way, the move adds up. If they push opposite ways, they can cancel out.
What moves it
- The ECB. 8 meetings a year, decisions usually at 8:15 am ET.
- The Bank of Japan (BoJ). 8 meetings a year, usually announced in the Tokyo morning, which is late evening ET. After ending below-zero rates in March 2024, any hint of further rises can lift the yen.
- The rate gap. Euro rates have been higher than Japan's for years. Money often borrows cheap yen to hold higher-paying currencies, which supports EUR/JPY in calm times.
- Risk mood. In a market scare, that borrowing can unwind fast. People buy back yen, and EUR/JPY can drop sharply.
- Japan stepping in. When the yen weakens fast, Japan's finance ministry has bought yen before, in 2022 and 2024. That hits every yen pair.
When it's busiest
EUR/JPY has a long active day. It stirs in the Tokyo session, roughly 7 pm to 4 am ET, then often speeds up when London opens around 3 am ET. US data at 8:30 am ET can add a burst through its effect on both halves.
Japan doesn't change its clocks. Europe and the US each change on their own dates. So for a few weeks a year, Tokyo, Frankfurt and New York times all shift against each other. Check the market hours tool in March, October and November.
Its personality
- Livelier than EUR/USD. It carries the swings of two pairs.
- Grinds up, drops fast. In calm markets it can climb slowly. In a scare, falls can be quick.
- Follows stock markets on many days. Not always, but the risk-mood link is worth knowing.
Check both parents. Before a EUR/JPY trade, glance at EUR/USD and USD/JPY. If they disagree, EUR/JPY may chop sideways.
Reading it with our method
- Daily chart first. Mark the last places price turned around, and name the trend.
- Use a smaller chart only to time it, in the same direction. Our multiple timeframe guide shows how.
- Body close only. Yen pairs often spike past levels on news, then pull back.
- Size from the stop. Wider swings mean wider stops, so a smaller size. The lot size calculator keeps the money at risk near 1%.
Common mistakes
- Treating it as a calm euro pair. Its range is usually bigger than EUR/USD's.
- Using $10 a pip. The pip is in yen. In dollars it's usually less, and it changes.
- Ignoring the BoJ because it lands overnight.
- Stacking yen trades. Selling the yen in EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY and USD/JPY at once is mostly one bet on the yen.
Questions
What is a cross pair in forex?
A pair that doesn't include the US dollar, like EUR/JPY. Its price comes from the two dollar pairs behind it, here EUR/USD and USD/JPY.
Why does EUR/JPY fall when stocks fall?
In a scare, traders often close trades funded with cheap yen and buy the yen back. That pushes yen pairs, including EUR/JPY, lower. It's a tendency, not a rule.
How much is a pip on EUR/JPY?
¥1,000 per standard lot. In dollars that's ¥1,000 divided by the USD/JPY price.
Is EUR/JPY more volatile than EUR/USD?
Usually, yes. It combines the moves of EUR/USD and USD/JPY, so its normal daily range tends to be wider.
